Post something about the Unrec function.

Please remind people how it works.

Please tell us what you're seeing behind the scenes.

Please tell people what impact unrec has on the greatest page.

Please report on what you feel about the people being paid to come to DU and unrec threads.

Have you busted anyone being paid to come to DU and fuck with the GP?

Just say something. People are doing some sort of sheep dance close to the edge of a cliff.

There's a small army of right wing goobers out that, sitting in their mom's basement, hands orange from eating Cheetos, with nothing at all to do except post hate filled nonsense online. They don't have jobs. They don't make money. They sit on their big behinds and type about things they have never done and will never do.

Are some here? Always.

Does it matter? No. They're just hacky sacks waiting to be kicked.

4. I'll predict the answers, if he responds.
Post something about the Unrec function.

It is having the effect the admins intended.

Please remind people how it works.

It works by making sure that any thread which makes it to the Greatest Page has actual, positive backing by the DU membership, not simply a handful of votes for Recommend.

Please tell us what you're seeing behind the scenes.

There are a few cases of abuses, but it's mainly DUers simply voting as they believe, and not keeping important topics off the Greatest Page.

Please tell people what impact unrec has on the greatest page.

Unrecommend has improved the quality of threads on the Greatest Page.

Please report on what you feel about the people being paid to come to DU and unrec threads.

Trolls play a minor role in the process. It's DUers voting as they see fit.

16. It takes a net POSITIVE 5 Recommends, instead of simply 5 Recommends.
That's a huge difference from the previous system, where any five posters could anoint a thread with the requisite 5 votes.

Now, those five Recommends mean little if met with Unrecommends.

The new system is great, it works, and the DU is keeping it.

The whole process have been enhanced in value and more significant, where it wasn't before.

Yeah, now it takes 10 !!!!!!!!11!!1! or 25!!!111 or 106 !!!!11!!! NOBODY KNOWS.

Trying to cancel others votes for a system of recognition is petty and insane (esp. to believe it's meaningful) and the domain of those who are petty and like playing mindgames.

 It's tacky and classless and gauche.

41. No, that's not true. It takes a PLURALITY OF FIVE RECOMMENDS.
There may be 100 Recommends and 95 Unrecommends.

That's more than two handfuls of Recommends.

Your example simply isn't correct. A plurality of five recommends is required, and the total vote can be anywhere from 5 Recommends to 0 Unrecommends, to 500 Recommends to 495 Unrecommends.

The impact of the alleged trolls is therefore minimized under this system. Their five votes are virtually insignificant.

53. You don't understand the math at all.
The impact of trolls is vastly decreased under the new system. It renders their votes almost meaningless. Before, they could vote for any pile of shit thread and give it +5 Recommends. Now, their voting is given the inconsequential impact their votes deserve. They can't affect good threads going to the Greatest page, and they can't put bad ones on there.

You just don't like the way they keep low content off the Greatest page.

62. "The impact of trolls is vastly decreased under the new system." Vastly INCREASED, you mean.
You all -- who continue to play Un/Rec -- complain about "trolls" and think you know who is voting and how or why, which is unknowable....

You all think there are a bunch of trolls gaming the system now even though you all think it's less gameable than before....

You love the math, however many handfuls it takes to have 5 more Recs than UnRecs, even though you have NO IDEA what the actual numbers are....

And YOU IGNORE THE FACT than many votes are just not there, for Rec or UnRec, because many DUers quit playing the game.

It's you and the trolls buddy, duking it out over handfuls of "votes."

"You just don't like the way they keep low content off the Greatest page."

That's just a stupid statement. I have already posted that apparent dregs get to the Greatest anyway. "Low content"? Please.

It's not worth caring about anymore. The people posting all these stupid threads now are the ones who favored UnReck and attacked those who found it tawdry and unecessary. You won. It's your game now.

17. trolls are at a disadvantage in any voting because they don't have the numbers like a poll
I did a poll once on "what kind of Democrat are you?" If you looked at the threads here, you would think DLCers and so-called moderates were a substantial minority, maybe 30-40%, the results were much lower since so many people responded:

The new system fairly guarantees that five trolls have little to no impact on the process, where before they could single handedly muster Five Recommends and meet the threshold.

There is zero data in your posts, just opinion presented as fact. That is the effectively the same as a fabrication.

When you have actual data to support your contention, then present them as fact.

In the meantime, stop calling the kettle black.

would have made it to the greatest page.

Most DUers were savage Obama supporters - yes, savage, they way they went after Hillary's hair, makeup, clothes, etc. - and they would have Ued each and every one of the posts.

At least, some about Hillary did make it to that page.

And then, of course, the clique atmosphere at DU is as such that some anointed can just sneeze and bet gazillion Rs, while others would generate the opposite.

Why? Because you are 100% correct! DU used the unrec system years ago, and it became a joke, just like it is now.

One doesn't even have to read a thread, if the title has something positive to say about someone I disapprove of (or vice versa), I can automatically unrec it, which is what is going on right now in DU.

Hillary would have never made the Greatest Page had this idiotic unrec system had been in effect during the primaries.

That is no more than your personal opinion. You get one vote per thread, same as everyone else.

If your opinion was all that mattered, you'd be the only person with the ability to recommend or unrecommend, and all of DU would bow to your decision. That would be a dumb feature.

Any thread that can be posted in under a minute probably isn't going to get a Recommend from me. Any thread that is about a personal like or dislike, same way. "Grrrr, I hate Fox News" isn't my idea of a Recommend worthy thread.

74. I think it's most intrusive when someone goes to the trouble
of making a thoughtful post, often with research & lots of time spent, only to post, click and see an immediate <0..in such a way that you KNOW no one even had time to read any of it..and for posts that are not in the least "controversial"..

Happens a lot in the wee hours or late at night.. I guess people are very picky and if they see ANYTHING that is not written specifically with their likes in mind.. well.. they get an instant "meh"..

Frankly, I rarely use either > or <.. I prefer to engage in the thread, and often forget to recommend, but just because I don't like something, is not enough reason to < it :)

83. ...here's a thot:
5 RECs means an OP makes it to the "greatest" page ... the effect of which means, "five people thot" it deserved to be "kept alive" a while longer.

Instead of being able to cancel-out RECs, with UNRECs, why not have OPs to be "kept alive" because at least "five people thot" it was a terrible idea/post? IOW: have two ways to "keep OPs alive" ... do NOT have RECs and UNRECs canceling each other out... have a GREATEST and a WORST page (where OPs can be "kept alive" a while longer)?

...just my 2cents

84. Unrec'd.
I fully support the system, and kudos to the ones who actually post in a thread when they unrecommend. It's mostly old DUer's I respect, but they just think my thread shouldn't make Greatest. Absolutely fine. I was on, I was off, on and off, on and off. And I'm perfectly fine with it.

When I look at Greatest, I think there are some fine threads there. Then I look into GD, and read further, and it's my main thing, despite of threads having +3921567 or >0. I read what I find interesting, Some I recommend, some I unrecommend. I do think it's a fair system.

And I would never blame trolls to unrecommend, because 1) they're mostly taken care of and 2) they don't know where to click. Yes, it's good DUers using the feature.

Of course, I rolled my eyes, and then I snickered. Not everyone on here has to go along with what I find 'OMG the greatest thread of all!' And it shows up with <0. Outrage! Foam at the mouth! It's fine. It's perfectly fine.

No, the trolls have little substantial here, believe me. Unless you think the admins and mods don't keep up, but they do. And even with 10% trolls on here, we have 90% of true DUers who use the system, and that's fine.

I recommended a lot of your threads in the past, but this one, I cannot.

94. That's what Bugs me. If one posts something and folks hate it then if there are
total Unrec's compared to None or few...then it would make sense. But, I see many worthwhile posts of in DU Editorials starting out with an "Unrecommend" when it was just posted. Later the post can get 15 or more Rec's? So what's with this "Jump out of the Gate" with the "Unrec's?"

It would be helpful to know so that we can gear our posts accordingly.

Skinner's long post about the feature. He said it was here to stay. It's his site, so I guess he can do as he pleases.

Doesn't matter to me. I almost never recommend or unrecommend any OPs anyhow. I never go the the Greatest page, either.

But, I'm far from an insider. Still, when the site owner says something about policy, I generally assume that's the way things are. If I don't like the rules, the door is nearby...
