Kennedy was 1 of only 14 Senators to vote against the so-called Defense of Marriage Act in 1996
One of the 14 Senators who voted against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, Sen. Kennedy was one of the stalwart — and much needed — voices of equality in our nation, and I particularly mourn for this loss.

For much of his political career, universal health insurance was a goal at the heart of one of those ideals. As he said in his 1980 address to the Democratic National Convention — the end of his failed run at the presidency — “et us resolve that the state of a family’s health shall never depend on the size of a family’s wealth.” His spirit, if not his voice, has been and will be a part of this year’s debate about the future of health care in America.
