This story will get lost today but FINALLY, something about the guns...
Guns near Obama fuel ‘open-carry’ debate
Second Amendment activists divided by public displays of firearms

Reason to cringe
While the outcome of the gunfight at Kassou’s Golden Food Market is perhaps the best publicity the open-carry movement could hope for, some in its ranks are cringing at the far greater coverage given to the recent open-carrying activities of others. Outside presidential town hall meetings from New Hampshire to Arizona, these gun owners have worn their loaded revolvers and semiautomatic pistols for all the world to see. One man slung a military-style AR-15 rifle over his shoulder.

One of the biggest attention-getters was William Kostric, who strapped a 9 mm Smith & Wesson in a SWAT-style leg holster and wore it to Obama’s Aug. 11 town hall meeting on health care in Portsmouth, N.H. “I wanted people to remember the rights that we have and how quickly we’re losing them in this country,” he told msnbc-tv's Chris Matthews.

The White House, hoping to allay fears of a security threat, has said that people are entitled to carry weapons outside such events if local laws allow it. "Those laws don't change when the president comes to your state or locality," spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

The incidents have stirred fear and anger among some Americans, and contempt from gun-rights activists for what they see as overreaction and unfair spin by the national media. They have also exposed a subtlety and nuance in America’s ongoing debate over firearms that are often lost in the predictable, shrill arguments between gun-control advocates and Second Amendment defenders.

The story is already buried in its self with some fluff in front of the real story.

1. Gibbs said a mouthful right there
quote for truth:

6. So Bush broke the law..
.. or got the local police to break it. Now you think Obama should, too?

I get it. It's not about justice, it's not about respecting the rule of law, it's about revenge. Because *'s cronies fucked with Cindy Sheehan or illegally detained a couple for wearing the wrong slogan on their t-shirts, you want to see Obama's team crack some skulls^H^H^H detain them for questioning.

Got it.

31. Agreed!
But that doesn't mean I want the person I voted for to do the same. I want my president to actually abide by the rule of law, and make the whole idea of the 'unitary executive' look as silly as Nixon did.

not demonstrate for the Second Amendment. And please don't lecture me, I own a Ruger SR9.

29. No..
..there is nothing special about owning a handgun that makes one's position anymore valuable than a person defending cries of racism by claiming black friends.

Your position could be eminently tenable, but trying to add weight to them by your purchases (or friends) is disingenuous. It proves nothing, and has no bearing one way or the other on the issue at hand.

32. I still don't need lectures on the Second Amendment....
or my black friends. These right wing nuts are trying to intimidate their opponents by carrying guns to town meetings. Defneding them is reprehensible.

8. The funny thing is
The absolute worst advertising you could have for open carry laws are these morons who decide to take a weapon to a heated political debate that's already well stocked with law enforcement.

I expect there are some people in Arizona having second thoughts about open carry after seeing little dick and his AR15 back scratcher.

Statement about gun rights... Yeah, pull the other one. It's got bells on it.

11. I'll mock that idiot from now until the end of time
So yeah, "little dick".

You telling me that moran doesn't have serious issues? I guess you didn't see the cocky walk or the shit eating, self satisfied look on his face while he carried a rifle on his back in an angry crowd. Imagine what an NRA safety instructor would say about that. One that hasn't been co-opted by the nutball political wing of the NRA anyway.

Not everyone who caries a gun is a poster boy for smarts and responsibility. This pinhead makes everyone who does look like a nut and that pisses me off.

Maybe you should think about what you're defending here.

12. Yes, he has serious issues, and one of them
is his Civil Rights. If you don't like that concept, then either sit there in front of your monitor until the cows come home and play keyboard-JudgeJudy with your book of adjectives or move to Arizona and change the laws.

In the meantime, there's this pesky lil thing called the Bill of Rights that you might want to decide whether you're for or against.

13. There's a difference between a right and a good idea
If you want to lose the right to open carry, keep promoting this crap as a good idea.

If the unbelievably stupid "I'm gonna bring muh gun to the riot" keeps up there will be bloodshed. Whether it's a nut that decides to start shooting cause the black copters and chemtrails are polluting his essence or he makes a stupid move and a police sniper opens his head. If this continues it will happen. Please note, I haven't said which side it will be with the nut\idiot. This particular breed of bug brain is weighted republican but crosses all boundaries.

As much as you may want to believe it with all your heart there is no specific right to open carry in the constitution. You can lose the privilege and if this escalates, you may. I support the second amendment but I don't support stupid and what that guy did (and you seem to be applauding) was astoundingly, mind numbingly dumb assed. Anyone who would carry a weapon that powerful and poorly secured is exactly the kind of person that shouldn't be allowed to do so. Probably should have adult supervision with anything as dangerous as a claw hammer.

Also, you can keep Arizona. Nice place for about 2 weeks out of the year but I'll pass on the 118 degree days.

Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 11:25 PM by nadinbrzezinski
thanks for leading to a discussion on what is rational or not.

This is what is called a misfire in political terms.

Oh and thank you Mr. President for NOT falling for the trap... and giving people a small civics lesson, including these guys.

BUT, the people who are carrying near the President, whether concealed or openly, are ignorant jackasses. I think they are trying to provoke a ban on guns near the president so they can feel justified in whatever they do as a result. They are looking for and trying to provoke a showdown on gun rights.

20. They are an embarrasment period
but the civics lesson has been good.

I suspect they will start leaving their pieces at home. It ain't working.

And this is starting to go the way they don't want it to go.

Me I may think it is a really bad idea... perhaps it should not be legal, but it is legal. So knock yourself silly boys... I am sure the snipers have you in cross hairs.

:-)

As is the SS is changing procedures as I type this... no, I don't know this as a fact, but I have a sneaky they are... but they will not play into that stupidity.

25. That is when I have to trust the judgement of the snipers
unfortunately.

Once I had the opportunity of crossing the perimeter for not one, but two security services and they were fast... only reason I think I am still with the living is... their package came around and a cop screamed at them that they indeed had called 9.11. (OR rather 311, the equivalent)

One of them was the the Secret Service...

And trust me, I have gone through the worst case in my mind... and every time it ends badly for the idiots bringing them to these places or the grabber, unless they are law enforcement and on the same com-net as the snipers.

Anybody tries to clear leather, or grab it...not pretty. I'd hate to be near... gonna be very messy.

Now after that... I foresee perimeters getting really wide... if not already.
