"The Edward M. Kennedy Public Health Care Option"

- That's what it should be called. Maybe we can teach the GOP a thing or two about 'branding'.

K&R if you're digging it.

1. That would have worked if they named it that before he died
Now it would just look like cynical opportunism, and be roundly rejected by the public.

2. I totally disagree.
Teddy's passing, IMO, gets the job done because the loss of Ted Kennedy serves to unite the FN Dems to get it done. Just like Medicare, the public in time will not understand why there ever was any opposition to it.

3. I don't think so.

Nobody called Cape Kennedy political opportunism. Nobody called RFK stadium political opportunism. Nobody called the Kennedy School of Government political opportunism.

Oh, WAIT! You're talking about how the MSM would vigorously spin against the idea, today.

Well, who gives a damn what those soulless ratings grubbing whores think.

5. You forgot Kennedy Airport
(formerly Idlewild).

The difference between each of those things and the health care bill is that only the health care bill is in any way contentious.

6. Yeah
And you're wrong.

There's no doubt that the Democrats should leverage this moment in some way. But it has to be careful and savvy.

7. He fought for this idea with his whole career. It is perfectly appropriate...
...to name the bill in his honor. Period.

Let the Republicans call 'political opportunism'. Their accusing anyone of that is just *hilarious*.

8. And that is the soundbite
Plus

Senator Kennedy got the best government healthcare, as prescribed for all sitting Senators for his entire career. He fought long and hard so that all Americans could have the same benefits. He stuck with his work until the very end and though struck with a serious medical condition he continued to live his life with dignity and in a manner of his choosing. The best legacy possible would be to secure this kind of treatment for all Americans.

19. Let's just quote Sen. Kennedy
"We must not surrender to the relentless medical inflation that can bankrupt almost anyone and that may soon break the budgets of government at every level. Let us insist on real control over what doctors and hospitals can charge, and let us resolve that the state of a family's health shall never depend on the size of a family's wealth.

"The President, the Vice President, the members of Congress have a medical plan that meets their needs in full, and whenever senators and representatives catch a little cold, the Capitol physician will see them immediately, treat them promptly, fill a prescription on the spot. We do not get a bill even if we ask for it, and when do you think was the last time a member of Congress asked for a bill from the Federal Government?

"I say again, as I have before, if health insurance is good enough for the President, the Vice President and the Congress of the United States, then it is good enough for you and every family in America."

Edward Kennedy, New York City, 1980

That is the soundbite.

13. You I agree with 100%. Let's stop pussy-footing around worrying what the Repubs think
It would be an entirely appropriate, and fitting, way to honor Ted.

17. I'm not worried about what Republicans would think
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 10:58 AM by alcibiades_mystery
It will be a failed move because it is a stupid move, and strikes precisely non-Republicans as cynical in the extreme.

21. Why, exactly, is it "stupid" to honor the cause of his lifetime by naming it after him?
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 11:55 AM by LibraLiz1973
I don't CARE what the Republicans think. They certainly aren't losing sleep over our thoughts!

9. It's almost guaranteed. Remember when Sonny Montgomery died?
The Defense budget got named after him. It will pretty much be the same thing.

I also assume the Big Dig will be renamed after him too.

10. I am against branding bills like that but.... You don't bring a knife to a gun fight, and this
is turning in to a gun fight for our future. Brand it.

15. Senator Byrd just issued a statement calling for that very thing.
I read it over at http://www.huffingtonpost.com

Sen. Byrd Wants Health Bill Renamed For Kennedy »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Hill's Briefing Room | Michael O'Brien | August 26, 2009 at 10:51 AM

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), the only senator to have served longer than the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), mourned his friend Wednesday, saying his "heart and soul weeps."

Byrd said he hoped healthcare reform legislation in the Senate would be renamed in memoriam of Kennedy.

Health Care was Teddy's fight. This would be the most fitting tribute to him.

is what Rush 'oxycotin' limballs said we would call it. This will just fuel his evil cause even further.

Putting his name on HR 3200 with its anemic, designed to fail "Public Option" would be an insult.

His name belongs on HR 676 (Extending Medicare to ALL).
