49. I see John, Bobby and John John Junior in the boat.
But it doesn't matter, they all belong there. Including the women.

My heart is breaking for what this country would have become had they been allowed to live and do their work.

81. Thanks
Mauldin was an amazing cartoonist. Back during the war, the brass always HATED his "Willie and Joe" strips, because he was showing soldiers in combat actually looking like soldiers in combat and actually having the feelings soldiers will naturally have about that.

I think he was on Nixon's enemies list as well.

31. If you want to print out a copy for your own use and use a Sharpie to
draw in tiller and rudder so they obscure the name of the sailboat -- if this would make you feel better -- I really think you should do this.

The rest of us apparently have no trouble accepting the drawing as the metaphor it was intended to be.

At the thing in the hand of the skipper.... it's called the "Wheel" and it is used for steering. The rudderpost is not on the back, like a tiller style of steering, but underneath and through the hull.... I am a sailor....

92. I made no mention of any wheel of rudder post - have another look

I was a ocean racing sailor for decades. I also made my living building and repairing said racing sailboats. I built a forty-foot catamaran with dual stern mounted rudders that were connected to a wheel for steering, only we called it the helm.

Oh, most tillers I encountered were attached to thru-hull rudder posts to allow for better handeling.

110. Interesting.....
I had you pegged for a novice! My apologies! Whatever you meant, I think we were on different pages, and it' not important to me, it was still a cool drawing, and I got the meaning, and I agree, it would be much nicer if more detail was spent on a better depiction. I'd love to hear more in PM about your sailing exploits if you are interested. I am a Cat sailor too, mostly Hobies and such,Tornados, and once took a BW Supercat for a spin... awesome that was! But have sailed offshore as well on the west coast of Canada. I'm sure you have heard of Knox-Johnson, and Chay Blythe, I met those guys in Victoria once, they put on a slideshow of a cross Atlantic trip on a Cat.Can't remember which one it was, but He lost it in a pitch-pole) Something else! What boats did you race? Be cool to hear more, if you have the time, as I love sailing and hearing stories. And yes, I stand corrected... Helm it is...just a matter of semantics in some sailing circles. I currently am a bit land locked, (Illinois) but have my Hobie 14 Turbo for my "fix". Cheerio! :hi:

30. On a relatively calm day, the boat could be doing exactly what is pictured.
But even more to the point, you'll notice that they're sailing on
a cloud and not water, so I think you'll want to acknowledge
some artistic license here. ;-)

37. He's not heavy, he's my brother.
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 12:59 PM by Brother Buzz
A craft of that weight and size should never lean that much with one 's body weight. A flag is like an wind sock, it had to blow fairly stiff for it to fly that flat; more artistic license.

The concept of the original drawing is explosive as I mentioned in my first post. I only wish more homework had been done, like drawing Joe was wearing his flying outfit. I'd like to see a canoe stern rather than something that looks like it belongs on a gin palace crab crusher too.

A heavy duty symbolic drawing, for sure, but will never adorn my refrigerator.

Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 07:20 PM by Brother Buzz
I'm nitpicking because the drawing should have been so much more. A drawing worthy of the moment. A drawing that could have been instantly recognizable a decade from now, a classic. It looks like something Danziger sketched on a cocktail napkin to make the the deadline; a great idea but lacking development.

The character of the brothers are weak. Ted, I recognize, and maybe Jack at the helm. Which one is Joe? Bobby? And the boat, Geez louise, all four brothers would blow chunks if they were forced to board that tub.

I believe the four brothers and all sailors worth their salt would agree with me. Imagine such a thing.

75. I see your point. Great, great idea and beautiful message
but the drawing could have been better and like you said could have really lived on. My first thought when I saw it was that they were dropping HIM off in heaven. Since none of the people in the boat were clearly drawn it never dawned on me that they were his brothers. And the clouds by the dock?

78. Joe is the one in the back, in what looks like a flight jacket, furthest away
And hardest to see(which makes since, since he died first and people today would have the fewest memories of him.

Bobby is the one helping Ted into the boat(appropriate, since their deaths were the last two of the brothers).

it's hard to see because he's at the back of the drawing...symbolizing how blurry people's memories of him are compared to the others.

Personally, I think I'll be more than satisfied with this life. I aspire to no eternity, and I don't believe in an afterlife. That makes it all the more imperative to me to do something meaningful with the life that I do have.

44. And an appropriate poem to go along with that cartoon...
Crossing The Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

- Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Even today, it's hard to even read a book or watch a documentary about them without reaching for the Kleenex! I won't be able to watch the upcoming "Brothers" documentary because it will bring it all back!

And the "kid" was the one who picked up THAT torch and carried it high and proudly!! The KID who saw his brothers die, had his heart broken time after time, and still marched on!

He can now be re-united where ever it is that they have gone!

55. Hmm
Funny, when I read the post I didn't really think it would have an effect on me. But it succeeded in choking me up a bit too.

87. Why is it so hard to let oneself GRIEVE in this society?
I don't get this at all... when did it become chic to be so tough?

The Kennedys weren't.....they grieved.

101. Everybody has their own way of dealing with grief, just as everybody has to die.
We all do the best we can, given the circumstances...

111. Yes, we are all different. It just seems like so many lately have bought into this idea
that expressing any kind of emotion is BAD.

????

So, the question is, are even "progressives" now going to buy into this meme that compassion and empathy are "Bad"?

I don't get it.

72. Thanks For That
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 07:01 PM by Mark D.
We must keep that dream alive everyone in DU and beyond. JFK fought for us, RFK fought for us. JFK Jr. like them, gone too soon. RFK Jr. and his brother fight in the public arena outside politics. They showed us how. We weep today, but tomorrow we must return to battle. If we believe, we know Teddy's still watching, and he wants reform passed, for us all. That's who they did it for. Because of their altruism, they paid a price. They wouldn't have lived any other way for the short time they were here. Never give up...they didn't. This reminds me of how I felt when I learned one of my favorite songs, by The Beach Boys, was written by Brian and Mike the day they learned JFK had died. The song called "The Warmth of the Sun". The first verse is for that sadness, the rest was written to make it a song of love lost, so it would appeal to others. As they said in that song, in that magical first verse, of a changed world:

"What good is the dawn, That grows into day, The sunset at night, Or living this way, For I have the warmth of the sun, Within me at night"

80. Good Sailors... all of them!
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 09:00 PM by stuball111
I know that sport well, and two things are paramount to being a good sailor. Respect, and concern. Respect for the sea, as it is a power greater than us, and concern for others. For should a sailor succumb to the sea, a good sailor will put his own concern aside to try to help those in need. God bless you, Kennedy brothers, and may fair winds bless you on your journey.

84. "Away, O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!"
Away, O soul! hoist instantly the anchor!
Cut the hawsers—haul out—shake out every sail!
Have we not stood here like trees in the ground long enough?
Have we not grovell’d here long enough, eating and drinking like mere brutes?
Have we not darken’d and dazed ourselves with books long enough?

Sail forth! steer for the deep waters only!
Reckless, O soul, exploring, I with thee, and thou with me;
For we are bound where mariner has not yet dared to go,
And we will risk the ship, ourselves and all.

O my brave soul!
O farther, farther sail!
O daring joy, but safe! Are they not all the seas of God?
O farther, farther, farther sail!

concluding stanza of "Passage to India" from Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman

89. May the wind be always at your back
Traditional Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
The sun shine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

104. There May Be No More Powerful Medium...
than the Editorial Cartoon. This is masterful and sums up what all of us are thinking; Teddy's loss only brought the loss of John and Bobby back to us with the same sadness that we felt when we lost them. This cartoon is a comfort for all of us, I hope that Teddy has joined the brothers that he loved so much and lived his life for. RIP.
