5. Why are you watching Fox News at this hour?
Better still, why are you watching TV at all?

I don't mean to criticize you, I just can't stand the sight or sound of it in the cool, peaceful, quiet morning.

3. I found most of the broadcasts this morning nauseating,
I guess that, if Stewart was not on leave, he would make a show about that, between their insistence to talk about interviews they made of him (as if it mattered) and on insisting on the less interesting parts of his life rather than the best ones.

It's part of his past so it probably will be mentioned at some point during a 3 hour morning show.

20. Oddly, that's what I was thinking.
If Laura Bush died and people kept mentioning the car crash--wasn't it one that killed her boyfriend or ex-boyfriend--would people be as bent out of shape?

I think not.

In either case, I'd say the same. The person's dead, resquiat in pacem, in spem resurrectionis ad vita. (Butchered Latin or not.)

Defined the man for a long time in the eyes of many.

It's part of who he was, part of his history. Teddy wasn't perfect. He was just human.

26. Iran Contra was part of who Reagan was too
but I never once heard it mentioned for the full week and a 1/2 of the 24/7 gushing coverage of his passing.

Reagan did more to set the wheels in motion to bringing this country into the path of destruction we are now on than any other single individual, but I don't recall that being mentioned either.

He ranks right behind G W Bush as one of the worst presidents we have ever had to suffer through. I don't remember that being mentioned either.

15. It was a defining moment in his, and Mary Jo's, life
He left her trapped in a car under water, and went back to his hotel room.

Sorry, but that is EXACTLY what he did.

He subsequently pleaded guilty to the charge of "leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury." In his testimony Kennedy said "I almost tossed and turned and walked around that room ... I had not given up hope all night long that, by some miracle, Mary Jo would have escaped from the car..."

Of course, her chances might have been greatly increased had he bothered to inform rescue services of the accident. He, however, chose not to.

It is not clear that the resulting two-month jail sentence (suspended, of course) is what you, or I, would have received.

I see it not as "obsessing," but as revealing a snapshot of the character and moral values of the man. He had a clear choice.

No. I do not respect Ted Kennedy.

I do, however, respect that he was one of the few who continued to support progressive social policy - in spite of his own lack of moral compass and human compassion.

He admitted it wasn't his best moment, yet the wing-nuts obsess over it as "proof" of "liberal immorality" or some such BS. total crap, and probably projection too (I don't see them going after Laura Bush, oh wait, that stuff is only bad when WE do it according to them...).

21. I don't understand why people are upset about it being mentioned
Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 09:20 AM by Mike Daniels
As you said it was a defining moment of his life and by most accounts it effectively killed any chance he had to obtain higher office.

Even if he had been nominated as the presidential candidate in 1980 that incident alone would have probably been enough to kill his chance of being elected.

People bitching about the media mentioning it seem to be missing that within the span of a three hour program it's getting about a minute or two of coverage here and there vs. the other 173 minutes that are spent going over the rest of his life and what he achieved in the Senate.

From 5 to 7:30 it came up once in Morning Joe and even then it was presented within the context of some meeting Nixon had with Kennedy some years after the fact.

25. Pff.
"He left her trapped in a car under water, and went back to his hotel room."

Sure, after trying to rescue her himself several times. How many times have you dove into the water to try to rescue people from submerged cars, Superman?

"Of course, her chances might have been greatly increased had he bothered to inform rescue services of the accident. He, however, chose not to."

Greatly increased, eh? What do you think the numbers are? There were the many minutes Kennedy tried to rescue her himself. The long walk back to a phone. And the time it would have taken rescuers to get to the remote location? How long can you hold your breath there, Aquaman?

40. Lots of Ted Kennedy hate on the BBC website.
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 01:45 AM by moondust
The "Have Your Say" section where people can post and recommend comments has a "Readers' Recommended" section that is nothing but hate for Ted Kennedy for supporting the IRA and Chappaquiddick. Frankly, before today I had never heard of him supporting the IRA and I wonder how much of it is proven fact and how much is demonization.

To assume he is guilty of something besides leaving the scene of an accident at Chappaquiddick seems to be a bit of a stretch if you think about it. Nobody risks their own life driving their car off a bridge into murky waters in the dark to do away with somebody. And once the car accidentally goes off a bridge into dark waters it surely becomes a case of panic and one's own survival. I get queasy just thinking about driving on a bridge without any side rails at night and feeling a front tire go over the edge.
:scared:

I think the Chappaquiddick thing has about as much credibility as pulling the plug on grandma. It's a RW smear job by people who wanted to "get the Kennedys." People like Nixon.

42. I told my husband that about the BBC website
and he said, "He went to an IRA funeral??" I said that's not true, he worked for peace in Northern Ireland. Granted that I'm Irish myself and throughout the eighties my family didn't like the way Thatcher handled the situation at Long Kesh (refusing to talk to Sinn Fein and such and letting a MP die in the process). I felt she actually prolonged the Troubles with that refusal and Teddy wore a green tie whenever he met her in the eighties and that was exactly my family's sentiment towards Maggie. He wasn't supporting the IRA though and I don't either as I've had relatives who were killed by the IRA bombs, like Omagh and Bloody Friday (my mother survived Bloody Friday).

The BBC website's comments are truly despicable.

44. It's a real eye-opener for those who think the US is somehow "meaner"
for it's venomous, ignorant rightwingers.

The only thing different about this country is that our M$M is so completely beholden to the corporatocracy.

If it weren't for that, we wouldn't have such parasites in DC... and the gov't/laws would more accurately reflect this country's views, instead of being bent to the will of corporations.

But he did a lot of other things in life, and he accomplished a great deal, so let's not forget about that, either.

The Kennedys have a lot of dirty laundry, and that's just the truth.
Now, if the media would only start paying attention to the Bush Crime Family.....
