Yahoo's Email Spam Filter favors Repugs
I just noticed a curious thing.

During the months leading up to the Nov 2008 election, I signed up for both Democratic and Repuglican newsletters and broadcasts on the internet using a Yahoo email account. It was very Repug-nant to have to look into what the Repugs were doing, but I held my nose and did it.

I just realized that nary a Repug piece of email goes into my spam box - but 90% of all the Democratic newsletters, broadcasts, and calls for action do! Even though these days I almost never read the Repug newsletters - I glance at the headlines in my email account to see what vicious silliness they had up their sleeve in order to try and stop Obama.

Can anyone else comment on this!

1. That's very interesting.
I avoid RW sites and RW publications like the plague, so I can not confirm your observation, but I am very interested to know whether others have experienced what you have.

k&r for exposure.

2. Might be organic
As I understand Yahoo's spam filter, everyone who has a Yahoo account contributes to what the system sees as spam. So if the Republicans are marking everything Democratic as spam, but Democrats are simply deleting Republican stuff, then wouldn't Yahoo come to see Dem stuff as spam?

3. That is one possible explanation, and far less sinister than

How my husband takes this. I am glad to hear from someone who has a bit more technical awareness than I do on these email situations.

M. keeps pointing out the intentional slant of the Yahoo headlines.

For example, during the run up to the nomination, Yahoo headlines (in their news) announced:

Story One) Obama and Clinton in dead heat

Followed by this headline:
Story Two: Black males responsible for an increase in crime in most major cities.

I wish he had taken the time to keep a journal on these. They were very slanted, and to us, they seemed deliberate. (M. has also tried to disable the headline feature but cannot get them to go away.)

4. During the Michael Jackson trial
Baynews9, a local cable channel suspected of being Right Wing, would run news of the Michael Jackson controversy and then follow it with something about gay marriage or some timely gay issue. I called them on it, and the programming director swore that they weren't running the two together as some sort of statement, but she also didn't acknowledge how offensive it would be if they were.

Sometimes it's wise to go a tad out of our way to avoid looking like we're doing something we shouldn't. When the first viable black candidate for president is running for office, you don't lead or follow with the mugshots of black criminals, even if that's all the criminals you have that day. You do something which can't be mistaken for racism or bias. It might be a sad state of affairs, but it is the way it is. Appearances matter.
