A simple story about Ted
20 years ago my brother broke his neck in the surf in New Jersey

He was older than 18 and no longer covered under my parents health plan.

The price for an air ambulance ride back to Massachusetts was way too high for my family to afford.

My mother called Senator Kennedy's office and told a staffer the story.
The staffer said he would discuss it with the senator and get back to us.

Three hours later the phone rang and it was Ted himself offering comfort and so much more to my highly distressed mother.

It seems the there was a little known provision in the funding for the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing funding which REQUIRED them to
provide transport to Massachusetts residents injured far from home.
Within one day my brother was flown from New Jersey back home to Massachusetts for free.

The senator set the whole thing up and even sent a get well card.

For this one thing he was much loved in my family.
and I'd bet he did these type of things for constituents all the time.

11. Great Story - his office and he were amazing in responding to situations like this
I had occasion to reach out to him in the last year over a piece of legislation. His office responded and helped us after talking with him - even in sickness he was there.

12. Fantastic story! What a wonderful man Ted Kennedy was
:toast:

Also, if I'm not mistaken, Dukakis was governor at the time, and he certainly would have helped out, too.

19. We hear them now, that he is gone. He did not do it for publicity or to get votes. He did it
because he loved people and was raised to serve.

A TV commentator in Massachusetts said, "Everybody has a Ted Kennedy story," meaning a story of some act of service, kindness or incredible thoughtfulness done by Ted Kenney. But, he sought nothing but to be of help.

As Biden said, "It was never about him, always about you."

16. Thanks for sharing this with us
I've been hearing stories like yours for the last two days. I'm finding out that, yes, he did do these types of things for constituents all the time. I always knew in a general sense that he did, but the specific tales of compassion are making me miss him even more.

18. I would not be surprised if he paid for it himself and said it was the law.
He did not want publicity for his thousands of acts of caring.

One of the greatest love stories since Romeo and Juliet is Kennedy's love of people, especially those who needed something they could not manage on their own. He loved them and they loved him and always will.
