[Obama] won't be able to do anything with bipartisan cover
I have been pondering a related question: "Will Obama be willing to veto a bad bill?" Because there will be enormous pressure on him to sign whatever comes out of Congress and Declare Victory.

As I wrote yesterday, these guys are basically forcing Conrad, Baucus and Bingaman into a corner. If the GOP won't give them any bipartisan cover, they are out there all alone. It's quite the game of chicken at this point.

This health care debate is looking like it's finally going to tell us what our president really believes in. (We know where he is on national security, but then nearly all presidents of both parties are hawks so it doesn't really tell you anything. Domestic policy is where the rubber meets the road.) The Republicans have completely taken themselves out of the debate and the only arguments are among Democrats. And that means President Obama's going to have to decide which side he's going to put his weight behind. It's hard to believe he'll come down on the side of the liberals after all the effort he's put into placating the medical industry, but it's always possible.

One thing's becoming completely clear --- he won't be able to do anything with bipartisan cover and that means it's all coming down to his partisan leadership. Which way will he go?

2. Depends on what a "bad bill" includes.
I think there are a lot of variables here. I don't mind if a bill comes out that is incomplete, but it just shouldn't be billed as "reform". It's a step in the process, but not real reform.

4. Good question. I think politically, a "bad bill" means...
any bill that forces a significant number of people into a worse situation regarding health insurance. That might mean increasing some people's premiums, or forcing some people into private insurance they don't want, increasing deductibles, etc.

Conversely, I think a bill that improves insurance coverage for at least some significant number of people, and doesn't make things worse for anybody else, could be spun as some kind of victory, without destroying the Democratic party brand.

Anything that falls short of that minimum is going to really damage the Dems.

The one thing that would have unambiguously destroyed the GOP for years, and cemented Democratic power, would have been for them to pass Single Payer on a partisan vote. Of course, in their infinite wisdom, they voluntarily took that off the table before the game even started.

3. My Congressman was whining about Obama not being bipartisan
and the rwingers in the crowd cheered. So the GOP has already sold its base on the notion Obama won't reach out, even though it is obvious he is doing so.

5. Whatever bill he signs he, and the Democrats, will own.
It better be a good one.
