Howard Stern has survived worse.

If you're going to be a racist fucktard you better have something else going for you. Imus never did.

1. It's about allies, and Imus didn't have any
No one came to bat for him really. He doesn't belong on the Left because he's an asshole and an uninformed bigot. He doesn't belong on the Right because he has called Bushco on some of their bullshit , called for impeachment, etc. He's too wierd for Middle America. He is in no way beloved. And he looks like a child molester or something. Worst, his advertisers and employers didn't get from him what they couldn't from anyone else.

He's just an easy target because in the end, no one was there to defend him. What he said was ignorant, racist, stupid and doesn't deserve air time, but it is mild compared to five things I heard on the local radio on the way in this morning.

Just an easy target for an angry mob.

4. Please, no violins for this multimillionaire.

I was in NYC when his show started, He was a big hit but he still teamed up with Gerry Rivera to promote each other to increase their ratings. I got tired of listening to the pretend mutual admiration society that was just about business--just like corporate CEOs eager to make money and maybe cutting some corners to provide some cheap thrills-whatever it takes to keep the millions coming. I am not a fan of rich people who make money by dumping on people who are not rich.

His anti-women comments really dated him----I am almost as old as Imus and his "humor" reminded me of the crappy comics who were on television telling "wife" jokes----very big in the '50s and 60s. If women didn't like it they were told "Whatsamatter, can't take a joke? " Trouble was the demeaning jokes were always about us. It takes a toll.

In Imus's humor we are the targets, and I think the acceptance of that humor makes it more likely we will be targets in life. I applaud people who finally stand up to his crap.

Maybe Imus can do satellite radio and his fans can still hear him.

I've seen his show about 3 times. Once he had a topless woman and the humor was supposed to be he and his pals making fun of her breasts. Another time he was announcing his support for G W Bush over Al Gore. As for the western motif--well, I's rather see Midnight Cowboy again.

I understand that people like Limbaugh are worse and with no demeaning value whatsoever and that what is worse, in his case, is that his audience is full of hard-core women-haters. Your point about the state of radio is a good one.

8. I'd say you nailed it.
Right-wing nut jobs like Rush and Hannity top his Imus' comments just about every week and the media doesn't so much as raise an eyebrow.

9. Easy,but still worthy.
If two people are doing something wrong it's not a matter of which one is less wrong.

2. Howard Stern is a Lot Smarter Than Imus
He can courted controvery without being fired, and is human enough to the point where he has loving fans of both genders and all races. If this had happened to Howard, defenders would have been coming out of the woodwork insisting there was a double standard. No one is passionate about Imus.

13. But Stern WAS fired. From the same station as Imus.
Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 05:44 PM by americanstranger
IIRC, it was because he had a 'Dial-A-Date' bit that he did on Fridays, and the day before Hurricane Gloria hit, he had a guy on who had sex with his dog.

By the time the hurricane passed, Stern was out on his ass, and he maintained that Imus had a lot to do with his dismissal. Then he went to what was then K-Rock in NYC, kicked Scott Muni's ass in the afternoon drive ratings, then moved to morning drive and kicked Imus' ass in the ratings. He became the undisputed king of NY radio inside a year from being fired.

But at the time WNBC canned him, nobody stood up for Stern but his listeners - and nobody took them the least bit seriously. In retrospect, they may have backed the wrong horse.

10. I am split on this. While there is no real talent in tricking morons,
the fact that he has been able to do so for over 15 years, and has managed to convince his listeners that he is a normal, middle class guy like them, is still saying something.

with impunity. Or maybe Clear Channel will beat FOX to the punch.

He'll probably write a book, too.......

7. Stern has 'talent'?
is it the porn stars or the 'midgits' or the 'midgit porn stars' that makes him 'talented'?

interested in what you definition of 'talent' is.

Howard Stern (haven't listened in probably 20 years) has NO talent and frankly it is a sad, sad reflection on our 'Murican society that he is so popular.

14. Was listening to a radio show this morning
one of the callers identified as a black woman and said she found the comments by Imus offensive but funny, so she gave him a pass. She said as long as you make me laugh I don't care. Besides my own personal view that it wasn't funny, I have no idea how you can compartmentalize like this.

17. Howard Stern re Imus this am.... LOL!
Howard said that Imus will not return from his suspension and he will stick to that prediction. The caller asked him if he's happy about that. Howard asked Robin if there's something better than happiness. She gave him a few words that were a little better than happiness. Howard said he's not really sure it's happiness but he does enjoy watching all of this stuff unfold. He said he predicted that Imus would lose his job and he thinks he will also lose his wife. The caller thinks that Howard is happy about because on some level he is competing with him. Howard said he never competed with Imus because he had no talent, ever.

Howard said Imus' wife is a very motivated Yenta and blowing and fucking that guy can't be fun on any level. He said that's why she will leave him eventually. He talked about the people he's had on the show who worked at Imus' ranch and had some horror stories about that. He thinks that Imus is half senile now and that's what his problem is. He also doesn't think that any of Imus' team will ever work near him. He said that everyone on that show has done something in the past that would prevent that. He said that Charles McCord is a no talent motherfucker who used to give him attitude back when they were working at NBC. He said when their ratings went up, that's when Charles was willing to talk to him.

Howard said that Bernard McGirk was another one who would call him begging for a job and then go on the air at Imus' show. He told that guy to go fuck himself and to never come to satellite looking for a job. Howard said that they have major problems at that radio company (Viacom) with their 0.0 morning team and now Imus. Howard said that all of this brings him to the Radio Hall of Fame and how they can't have a hall of fame without him. He said it's just a Hall of Lame without him in it.

Howard said that Imus' wife Deirdre was on Good Morning America before all of this stuff went down. He played an audio clip of that interview. She was talking about how Imus used to be an alcohol and drug addict so she had to keep all of these household chemicals away from him. The guys stopped that tape and goofed on him about that stuff. The caller said he thinks that all of this stuff will help him out in the long run. Howard disagreed and said that being a racist will not help him out in the long run.

He loathes him more than anyone alive. Lots of stories in Stern's first book about Imus.
