All right, fellow DUers of Irish descent, it's time.
I've been avoiding this all day, but I've got to get it over with and would rather not do it alone. I can't listen to it without crying on the best of days and today is not the best of days.

Anyone care to join me in listening? (the crying is optional...or maybe not)

Traditionally it was intended for a woman to sing it, I believe, so we'll go with this one. I suspect you know what it is already.

2. I was doing really good until now
I made it through the sail boat toon with the Kennedy brothers and all the stories, interviews and everything.

There was a moment earlier on MSNBC but I made it past that.

Now you did this to me: :cry:

Isn't it strange that the hurricane that's predicted to blow through Massachusetts during Teddy's funeral is named "Danny"?

I've listened to this version a few times - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=852gverKRPo

Coming from Reardons, Donohues, and O'Shays I remember a few 'old style wakes'.

I'm having a glass of red and my own private wake.

Thank you for posting this.

Edited on Wed Aug-26-09 08:25 PM by havocmom
with a young man on a campaign. The young man and the (then) priest, were discussing that few here in America knew all the verses.

My daughter's friend tells the tale of that night shortly after coming to America so long ago, when he sang all the verses with a young man on campaign, a young man by the name of Jack.

Yeah, pass the hankies.

29. I'm not Irish, but how about this one, sung by an Irish artist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RBjwQroGNE

HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING

My life goes on in endless song
Above earths lamentations,
I hear the real, though far-off hymn
That hails a new creation.

Through all the tumult and the strife
I hear its music ringing,
It sounds an echo in my soul.
How can I keep from singing?

While though the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
And though the darkness round me close,
Songs in the night it giveth.

No storm can shake my inmost calm,
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?

When tyrants tremble in their fear
And hear their death knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near
How can I keep from singing?

In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our thoughts to them are winging,
When friends by shame are undefiled
How can I keep from singing?

This is written by a close personal friend, not of Irish decent either, but known to us all, Pete Seeger.

50. Not exaclty an Irish song
It is called Dante's Prayer and sung by Loreena McKinnet. A hauntingly beautiful song and always makes people cry.

I always thought Loreena McKinnet was Irish but she's Canadian.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDw3CyOmj20&feature=channel_page

Dante's Prayer

When the dark wood fell before me
And all the paths were overgrown
When the priests of pride say
there is no other way
I tilled the sorrows of stone

I did not believe because I could not see
Though you came to me in the night
When the dawn seemed forever lost
You showed me your love in
the light of the stars

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

Then the mountain rose before me
By the deep well of desire
From the fountain of forgiveness
Beyond the ice and fire

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me

Though we share this humble path, alone
How fragile is the heart
Oh give these clay feet wings to fly
To touch the face of the stars

Breathe life into this feeble heart
Lift this mortal veil of fear
Take these crumbled hopes, etched with tears
We'll rise above these earthly cares

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me
Please remember me

R.I.P Teddy
