Madonna booed in Bucharest for defending Gypsies
"BUCHAREST, Romania - At first, fans politely applauded the Roma performers sharing a stage with Madonna. Then the pop star condemned widespread discrimination against Roma, or Gypsies — and the cheers gave way to jeers.

The sharp mood change that swept the crowd of 60,000, who had packed a park for Wednesday night's concert, underscores how prejudice against Gypsies remains deeply entrenched across Eastern Europe."

"Nearly one in two of Europe's estimated 12 million Roma claimed to have suffered an act of discrimination over the past 12 months, according to a recent report by the Vienna-based EU Fundamental Rights Agency. The group says Roma face "overt discrimination" in housing, health care and education."

Roma still have a long road ahead of them in Europe.

1. I saw very blatant prejudice against the Roma in Ireland.
It was very sad and seemed to be completely accepted by society. :(

3. Sadly
blatant prejudice against the Roma people can be found all across Europe, and is largely accepted in many places.

7. I've heard that Union guys are lazy.
All of them are fucking mooches, since the three that I saw sitting on their fat asses, means that all Union workers are loafers.

10. Do you believe that stereotypes should be attributed to all that belong to a minority group?

16. Hopefully you will achieve a higher understanding one of these days.
Once you realize things aren't as cut and dry as you've expressed.

22. Another lazy response.
But I will continue to enjoy the solid relationship that the LGBT community has with the Unions and look forward to how we will help each other out in the future.

20. You're judging a whole race because 3 people ripped you off and you heard some bad rumors?
Am I understanding you correctly?

27. Not a very enlightened attitude.
Many people say that about black people in our country. It's not correct in any case.

4. I'm not going to judge.
But anyway, nobody likes to be lectured by an American pop star coming to their hometown, saying "y'all are racist". That does not win any points.

14. I remember seeing a band play in a small venue, like 100 people in the crowd
It was in 1991 or so, and I don't even remember the name of the band, but we were there to have a good time, to dance, rock out, socialize, have fun.

The first thing someone in the band said to the crowd was "Portland is one of the most racist places". What a downer! Nobody booed, but, it didn't exactly make people want to dance and have fun. And, to top it off, his statement isn't even true.

21. Heh! That reminds me -
I saw Pat Travers open for Blue Oyster Cult in 1984 . . . Most of the venue was still empty when he came out on stage and the first thing out of his mouth was "Shit, I could have played this gig in my hotel room".

He really endeared himself to the crowd that was there.

25. That's about as endearing as running up to the microphone and yelling "Hello Columbus!"
to the audience in Philadelphia.

26. Oh yeah, that's cringe-worthy.
Performers at the Excel Center in St. Paul often say how glad they are to be in Minneapolis.

Touring has to be hard but you should at least know where you are.

17. Growing up in Mississippi, I saw it firsthand. Nobody liked outsiders interferring.
Of course, Mississippi's case was that of a struggle against discrimination on account of color. My honors advisor back when I was in college told me that when she was in high school, news that JFK had been assassinated in Dallas on that November day came across the intercom at her school. Many of her classmates were happy that he had been gunned down she told me. Many called JFK a "nigger lover" in those days and resented him sending federal marshals to the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss for short) to desegregate the school and protect the very first black students attending their first day of college.

29. Groups of people who are denied the right to survive within the established system
Edited on Fri Aug-28-09 02:55 AM by ConsAreLiars
either find ways to survive outside of it or just die. The Roma chose the first. They worked outside that system. And although many of the "crimes" they have engaged in are common enough among those who condemn then, these skills and techniques have become a part of a way of life that allows them to survive as a people.

Compared to what those who control the US state apparatus have been doing, they are fucking saints.

(edit very minor typo)
