Michael Vick Given Standing Ovation in Philadelphia Debut
Stay Classy Philly, wouldnt expect anything different.

PHILADELPHIA -- All eyes were on Michael Vick -- for all of six plays.

Playing his first NFL game since his release from prison, the Eagles quarterback got a standing ovation in a half-empty stadium, avoided any ugly protests and completed four passes for 19 yards.

Edited on Fri Aug-28-09 10:25 AM by WI_DEM
I didn't say I hate him. If he had been introduced when I was there I would have sat quietly and not stood. I admire great football players but not one who did something as disgusting as he did. He may yet win my admiration if he actually does something more with his life in a positive way other than just play football and not simply court ordered service.

46. You don't have to use the word "hate" to express it.
You have posted a dozens times on this subject today alone, and your message is pure intolerance of Vick for the mistake he made and complete lack of forgiveness despite the punishment he received. Your posts here today do not reflect an attitude of admiration for anything nor do they even suggest a willingness to "sit quietly".

Getting out of jail is no guarantee that you'll get whatever job you want. Oh, and almost any job that requires a background check is closed to felons, either officially or in practice. And there are lots of those.

Most felons spend years trying to rebuild their reputations and their lives. Why should Michael Vick be any different?

The topic is fan adulation, not Vick's crime.

If you have hero-worship for someone who tortures animals, then I will admit I find your personal stance intolerable. If you can pretend to find anything else "intolerant" about me, then continue to appease yourself. Pshaw, *I'm* intolerant because I find animal cruelty reprehensible! I can't think of many places where that sentiment would resonate.

You cannot divorce the fact that this criminal was caught, tried, convicted, and punished for his crimes. He served out his sentence, and is now a free man. For you to constantly piss and moan about his crimes suggests that you don't believe that his punishment was adequate because you feel the punishment should continue.

Now, take you insults and shove them deep up your ass. I'm done here.

77. For the record, I don't think his punishment was adequate, and I don't mind saying so.
I think the main purpose of incarceration is public safety. People who are a continuing danger to people or animals, or who are likely to return to their criminal behavior, should be removed from the public. Not tortured, not even deprived of a decent life...but not walking around free.

Vick is one of these, imo.

23. I knew it would happen.
I predicted he'd be back immediately after he got busted. A lot of people were saying he was done and I said not a chance! As long as someone thought they could make money off him playing football, he'd be back. Remember how many chances Steve Howe got?
I said all he had to do was claim to have found Jesus and people would fall for it and forgive him. He didn't even wait to get locked up. He was interviewed after one of his first hearings and blurted it out. It was obvious someone told him to make sure and get that in.
He may have learned his lesson but we will have to wait and see. Off field behavior will tell.

To do something so horrific to such innocent creatures...something is not right with that type of person. My previous foster dog was evidently set on fire. It takes a sick individual to hurt an animal.

93. Actually, the term "sociopath" is no longer used by therapists, but has been replaced by the Dx
Anti-social personality disorder. Same thing, nicer sounding name.

Here are the criteria. One must meet three of these to be Dx'ed (I think Vick qualifies):

Diagnostic Criteria of DSM-IV

The DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, More) describes Antisocial Personality Disorder as follows:

There is a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others occurring since age 15 years, as indicated by three (or more) of the following:

* failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviours as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest;
* deceitfulness, as indicated by repeated lying, use of aliases, or conning others for personal profit or pleasure;
* Impulsivity or failure to plan ahead;
* Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults;
* Reckless disregard for safety of self or others;
* Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honour financial obligations;
* Lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another;
* The individual is at least age 18 years.

There is evidence of Conduct Disorder with onset before age 15 years.

101. For insurance purposes,
it sure is. But a number of people, including those who subscribe to the Hare Checklist, etc, are aware of it at very least being a wide spectrum. There are lots and lots of people who fit ASPD who are surely not sociopaths. And, dispite the recent change that you correctly mention in the US, words do have actual meanings.

Again, I'm not attempting to justify anything that Vick did. Quite the opposite. He's entirely responsible for vicious, anti-social behaviors that caused the suffering and deaths of animals. That should repulse everyone.

My interest, beyond Vick, has to do with societies' attitude towards animal cruelty. Obviously, I'm not saying that "society" represents everyone. But, I do have some thoughts about groups who engage, directly or indirectly, in cruelty to animals. That would include sub-cultures that torture dogs or bulls in the name of "sport." It also includes larger societies that engage in the cruelty that defines corporate "farms," where animals are systematically tortured, in preparation for market.

And I'm not bringing this up to distract from Vick. I am not in support of low sentencing standards for people who abuse animals in this way. I live in an area in upstate NY where people tend to get off far easier than he did. Let them commit a property crime, and the sentences are far stiffer. I think that the Vick case has the potential for helping animal rights advocates make progress.

83. I expected nothing less, but I'm not going to broadbrush Philly fans that way.
I think every market's team has their share of assholes. Philly just happens to stand out for some because of past actions. Frankly, I think that because they've now been stereotyped, it might be easier and more likely to have actions like this just out of lowered expectations. At any rate, not all Philly fans are assholes, and to expect a stadium full of football fans at their home field to NOT take a "stand" like that in support of that torturing douchebag isn't realistic.

I admire your position, I really do. And if I hadn't been dealing with the seemingly endless "bad seeds" for the past 8 years, I may have been able to emulate it.

The one nice thing I can say is that it doesn't seem to be limited to Philly fans. Most sports fans on the East Coast seem to be quite coarse. Philly fans just seem to know how to take it to the next level.

96. I have never lived there, no.
But I do know a number of Philly fans that are nothing like the idiots that seem to get the attention. I'm obviously far removed from the Philly sports scene. I did grow up in MA, so I spent much of my younger years at Boston Garden, Fenway and Foxboro Stadium. That was a different time, though. I don't *think* someone like Vick might have gotten a second shot in the late 1970's.

99. I think football fans are just worse than baseball fans
I have gone to Phillies games regularly over the years, and have never been harassed or endured anything worse than having to sit in front of cursing Mets fans or fend off a polite but overly-flirtatious male usher. It gets hot at those games, and I blush now to think of some of the short shorts and halters I used to wear back in the day - but still, no harassment. In general, people are there to see the game. Plus there are enough women and/or Dads with children in the seats that the guys who might want to act out would be shamed out of it pretty quickly.

At my first (and only) Eagles game, my girlfriend and I were repeatedly barraged with filthy suggestions even though we were bundled up in burka-like winter coats. A coarser, cruder bunch of pigs you are unlikely to find anywhere. Pigs. Sorry to stereotype, but you get that many drunk men in one place without any women or kids to keep the brakes on their behavior, and things deteriorate pretty quickly.

Not surprised that they cheered Michael Vick.

I believe the man has been rehabilitated and will be a productive member of society. He did the crime and served his time. He acknowledges what he did was wrong and he has apologized.

I would like to take my hat of to the Eagles organization, coach, players and fans for giving a nice welcome to Michael Vick.

It's nice to see that we can forgive and move forward.

This story gives me hope that we can forgive people who have committed criminal acts and move forward as a society.
