Report on a republican push-poll
There is a special election coming up in my Congressional District to replace John McHugh. This is a heavily Republican area that just recently sent a Democrat to the New York State Senate thereby tipping control to the Democrats for the first time in decades.

Last night I got a phone call for a push poll asking if I would still vote for the Democratic candidate if I knew he was a lawyer, if I knew he had defended tax cheats, if I knew he supported Obama's health plan and if I knew that he would support Nancy Pellosi. There were a number of questions aimed at Pellosi. I'd say the Republicans want to turn her into the next boogie man.

1. If that poll was being given by a real human being...
...rather that a recording who told you to "Push 1 for 'yes' and 2 for 'no'", I would say, "Why yes. All of those would make it all the MORE LIKELY that I would vote for him."

They have been trying to turn Rep. Pelosi into the boogie man for ages. In my neck of the woods, she already is.

4. The woman on the phone sounded African-American. I stayed on the line
and answered all the questions under the assumption she was an Obama supporter who would need a break from all the republicans she would be speaking to over the course of the evening.

Also, i like to screw up the statistics!

2. If you found out your Democrat candidate dressed in drag and stomps on kittens in 6" high heels...
smokes crack and has posters of Hitler in his bathroom, would you be more or less likely to vote for him?

3. You silly! It's only the Republicans who do that!
(Not that there is anything wrong with dressing in drag - it's just that it's only Republicans who do it in secret!)

5. Ah, but that's the point! They use push polls to float trial balloons!
They test a potential position by asking the hypothetical about the opponent. If the response is positive, they adopt it. If it is negative, they have already laid the groundwork to make it stick on the opponent! Roger Ailes mastered this. Rove continued it. It goes on.

7. That's why I thought people would like to hear about this. Clearly,
the Republicans intend to run against Nancy Pellosi next year. That's one way to get around having to face a popular President.

6. . . . and then lie about it when they're found out, and act all persecuted.

8. Update - they just called and tried to poll my husband but lost
interest when he identified himself as an Independent. I forgot to mention - they asked for me by name yesterday.
