I just drove by the Ford dealership in my small town. Formerly, the
new vehicles would be side by side, with barely room to open the doors to get in one. There were four rows like this, usually about 100 new vehicles and a flock of used ones.

Today, there were two vehicle widths of space between each vehicle on the lot, only two rows.

This town has a population of under 10,000, with under 40,000 for the county. The unemployment rate is 10.5%, median household income $29,000, 12.2% have bachelor degree or higher (county has 10.5%)

I don't think this area is doing well. Is it fairly typical?

1. Maybe people took advantage of the Cash for Clunkers
and Ford hasn't restocked yet.

2. They normally stocked pick-ups, SUVs, and the larger cars - for
the more economical cars, not so much. Would that have made a difference? I don't know the car business.

3. Dealers don't own the cars on their lot...
...they're floor-planned, and that kind of credit was very hard-hit. SBA and the Fed have stepped in to take up some of the slack, but it's probably still hard to get $$$ for inventory.
