Would Imus still have his job if he'd just called them HOES?
Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 07:22 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
The answer to that is a resounding YES. I've been thinking about this a lot the last couple of days. No one would have said a goddammed thing, and I think that is worse than the racial slur. How is calling someone the N word or nappy haired, but it's ok to call young women who have achieved a lot in a few years Hoes? This really pisses me off. These white fucking republicans call women bitches and whores but that's ok...I don't see the difference. It's at least just as NOT OK as a racial slur. Am I alone here?

And, I agree with you.

2. Duckie...you are correct....
Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 07:27 PM by MadMaddie
the term is derogatory....

I also think if he had chosen a different group of women....he may have gotten away with it..

And I also believe if he had said it 1-2 years ago he may have gotten away with it..

There is a shift going on in the country....its slight...but something is changing....

3. If he had said it about a group of white chicks...
He would have gotten away with it. It's ok as long as the girls are white. Pisses me off.
It's not ok to call anyone that shit.

4. No you're not alone on this. It's true, that if Imus just called them "hoes," he
would still have his job. Sexist comments are a dime a dozen on radio and no one gets nailed for it.

5. is nappy haired a racial slur? not to stevie wonder....
Looking back on when i
Was a little nappy headed boy
Then my only worry
Was for christmas what would be my toy
Even though we sometimes
Would not get a thing
We were happy with the
Joy the day would bring

"I Wish" - Stevie Wonder

the damage done by that radio loser was double dipping.the term ho as applied to women is very widespread, used, and accepted by tens of millions of music fans.

Black people can, apparently say the N word...no matter how ignorant they sound. It's mind boggling.

Would Imus have felt compelled to make a similar offensive statement had the Rutgers team been predominantly "White"?

Because he compared them to some other college team, mostly blonde amazons, and that's when the comment arose.

Edited on Thu Apr-12-07 08:07 PM by YellowRubberDuckie
I mean, HELLO!? Who gives a shit how much money you have, how tall your rims on your escalade are, or how many girls you banged last night. That shit just pisses me off...And then Bill Cosby calls them ignorant and he gets pooped on. Hello! Quit perpetuating that culture and making it ok! Ignorance is not ok no matter your race, religion, socioeconomic status!

I think Eminem is an idiot, his rap is not uplifting...am I racist for that? Sharpton just enjoys being offended and pulling the race card. It's all he has.

21. I hate to say "all" of any genre of music is void of value. And, misogyny
is alive and well in heavy metal and other genre's as well. But, I do think we have to address what is REALLY influencing our kids, and it's not some tired old white guy on MSNBC. I'm not defending Imus, but he certainly isn't alone in his contribution to a larger problem.

22. I beg to differ, namely because there's a lot of rap that doesn't have that mentality.
You might not see them on MTV or hear them on the radio, but there are numerous rappers/hip-hop artists who don't talk about materialism or meaningless sex.

WE love Jam Master Flash and Run DMC, old school rap....I know there are others, I'm talking about the ones who degrade women and talk about boozing, escalades, jewels and guns, etc...

But there are many current rappers who don't follow that mentality -- it's not just old school.

27. Here's an example by Common:
Artist: Common Lyrics
Album: Like Water For Chocolate Lyrics
Title: The Light Lyrics
Yeah..
Doo-doo-doo, mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm..
Doo-doo-d-doo, diggy-doo YO..

I never knew a luh, luh-luh, a love like this
Gotta be somethin for me to write this
Queen, I ain't seen you in a minute
Wrote this letter, and finally decide to send it
Signed sealed delivered for us to grow together
Love has no limit, let's spend it slow forever
I know your heart is weathered by what studs did to you
I ain't gon' assault em cause I probably did it too
Because of you, feelings I handle with care
Some niggaz recognize the light but they can't handle the glare
You know I ain't the type to walk around with matchin shirts
If relationship is effort I will match your work
I wanna be the one to make you happiest, it hurts you the most
They say the end is near, it's important that we close..
.. to the most, high
Regardless of what happen on him let's rely

There are times.. when you'll need someone..
I will be by your side..
There is a light, that shines,
special for you, and me..

Yo, yo, check it
It's important, we communicate
and tune the fate of this union, to the right pitch
I never call you my bitch or even my boo
There's so much in a name and so much more in you
Few understand the union of woman and man
And sex and a tingle is where they assume that it land
But that's fly by night for you and the sky I write
For in these cold Chi night's moon, you my light
If heaven had a height, you would be that tall
Ghetto to coffee shop, through you I see that all
Let's stick to understandin and we won't fall
For better or worse times, I hope to me you call
So I pray everyday more than anything
friends will stay as we begin to lay
this foundation for a family - love ain't simple
Why can't it be anything worth having you work at annually
Granted we known each other for some time
It don't take a whole day to recognize sunshine

There are times.. when you'll need someone..
I will be by your side, oh darling
There is a light, that shines,
special for you, and me..

Yeah.. yo, yo, check it
It's kinda fresh you listen to more than hip-hop
and I can catch you in the mix from beauty to thrift shop
Plus you ship hop when it's time to, thinkin you fresh
Suggestin beats I should rhyme to
At times when I'm lost I try to find you
You know to give me space when it's time to
My heart's dictionary defines you, it's love and happiness
Truthfully it's hard tryin to practice abstinence
The time we committed love it was real good
Had to be for me to arrive and it still feel good
I know the sex ain't gon' keep you, but as my equal
it's how I must treat you
As my reflection in light I'ma lead you
And whatever's right, I'ma feed you
Digga-da, digga-da, digga-da, digga-digga-da-da
Yo I tell you the rest when I see you, peace

There are times.. when you'll need someone..
I will be by your side..
There is a light, that shines,
special for you, and me..

(I'll) take my chances.. before they pass..
.. pass me by, oh darling..
You need to look at the other side..
You'll agree..

28. I don't know, I think the real outrage stems from the fact
that these young women are really in no way celebrities or in the public spotlight and they did nothing to deserve this. I really do think if he'd just said "HOS" that the outrage would have still been pretty high. Not quite AS high, certainly, but I still think it would have been there.

30. That is the main gist
since when is it tolerable to degrade people? he just didn't degrade black females, he degraded all women. Since when do we tolerate these degrading, dehumanizing, desensitizing terms? Where will it stop? until one master race and one gender is recognized as supreme?
