*** Ted Kennedy Memorial Service cont. - 9:00 ET - LIVEBLOG THREE***
Edited on Fri Aug-28-09 08:09 PM by Stephanie
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong,
To love pure and chaste from afar,
To try when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest,
To follow that star --
No matter how hopeless,
No matter how far.

To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march
Into hell for a heavenly cause.

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will be peaceful and calm
when I'm laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
that one man scorned and covered with scars
still strove with his last ounce of courage.
To reach the unreachable star.

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong
To be better far than you are
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star.

This is my quest, to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far
To be willing to give when there's no more to give
To be willing to die so that honor and justice may live

And I know if I'll only be true to this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm when I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star.

17. Now you know what a good Irish
(and Italian) wake is like.

This is what sitting shiva is for in the Jewish religion.

There's nothing like remembering our lost loved one, telling the stories, laughing, remembering, measuring what was lost, affirming our love out loud, and comforting each other.

Makes it possible to go on.

This is not just a memorial service - this is making American history. A whole generation is watching this as my generation watched Jack's and Bobby's funerals, and they're now making their own sad memories.

But it's an essential part of being a citizen, part of the beautiful American family.

Tonight, we all have to be proud to be Americans. We had Ted Kennedy serving all of us, and he made us proud.

At least for tonight, we have to be proud.............................

111. What do you mean by "younger"?
I'm 40. JFK and RFK were murdered before I was born. I wasn't around for their funerals. But I certainly knew about Teddy!

I remember my parents being so torn in 1980 - they were mad at him for challenging Carter, though in their hearts, they really wanted him to be President; they just didn't think he could win and the primary challenge hurt Carter too. I think they knew heartbreak was coming no matter what. I was only 11 that awful fall, but that was the constant dinner table talk so I got educated.

I'm not that personally attached to his brothers; I only experienced them as history - very important and relevant history, but still. Ted, now, him I knew as a force in my present for nearly 30 years.

And I've never even lived in MA!

113. sigh....there was no offense in my statement, 'K?
I'm sorry to have to be the bearer of this... but 40 really is no longer "younger". :)

Most young people I know really wouldn't have any frame of reference.

If you do, and surely there are some others, that is good.

It just won't be the majority. It's a different world now, sadly.

114. Oh, no offense taken at all!
I really sincerely wanted to clarify what you meant. I know I ain't no spring chicken! (I wouldn't be 25 again if you paid me!) I just thought maybe it had something to do with the Kennedy presence, the power of JFK and RFK and those times and that experience. I know what a powerful thing that is for people who lived and were aware in the 60s. I just wanted to point out that isn't necessary to know and love Ted.

Peace, no offense intended here either.

I didn't know Teddy, I just knew of him. What is weird is I feel a since of lost, I didn't know much about him. By reading the comments here and watching his memorial service I know I missed out a great man.

43. As a once-upon-a-time sailor, I'm laughing my ass off at Culver's story.
Salmon salad sandwiches and a quart of milk before a sail in a full gale ... for a FIRST time sailor??? Egads! Don't be to his leeward, for God's sake!

95. This has been remarkable. Like being of a family.
The unabashed joy and raucousness of this memorial is so intimate and warm. I happen to know someone who knew Teddy, and for the past few days I've heard stories that are just like this. What a big, big man. Makes me want to do good things.
