No need to reply or discuss, plenty of threads to do that in, but feel free if it strikes you.

And feel free to kick.

Personally, I just want to see the poll numbers.

Reaction to Imus situation, here at DU at least, has so far been:

On edit: I combined "understandably severe" and "about right" since it became pretty obvious to me that they were very similar.

1. Dialogue about prejudice
is a good thing. Even if it does get heated and emotional and flame-y, at least it's being discussed.

2. kick and voted.
Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many zeros are there in a brazillion?"

6. I Say Way, Way Overblown.
Whilst the country is sidetracked by the ridiculous Imus scandal,
"The Decider" appoints an asshole to undermine our Social Security:

10. Way, way overblown.............
every comedian from every race, religion and nation will need to go for diversity training BEFORE they write or present any more material for their patrons. Meanwhile our nation sinks to even lower depths.

15. Which is why he had to go
Imus and the rest of his "shock jock" cohorts rose to ascendancy by titillating their unsophisticated audiences with boorish and outlandish comments that no one else before them would have dared to say on the air.

And there is a reason for that. It is in very bad taste.

They do it to push the envelope. To be "edgy." To shock their listeners so much, they'll be talking about it at the water cooler when they get into work in the morning.

Well he finally crossed the line. He said something that creeped out his loyal sophomoric followers so much that even they couldn't laugh it off and berate the rest of us to "Get over it!"

I really hadn't come to terms with just how incredibly inappropriate his comments were until I asked myself -- If I were on the air talking about a women's basketball team, would those three words ever, EVER cross my mind? Not in a million years.

This was way. Way out of line.

us knowing we can't get to Rove so we'll settle for Gonzo (which is a good thing of course). We really want Rush, Hannity, Savage and the others who really do affect the social discourse in America. But we can't get them so we go after Imus, whose coarse comments have no affect to change anyone's life one way or the other. Aside from his coarse "humor," Imus does try to make a difference. As vile as he can be, he was instrumental in sounding the alarm about Katrina and for that I will be forever in his debt.

14. I'm going with other...
because it doesn't make sense. The media itself created the outrage...and amped it up. The entire cable-club could be fired for outrageous commentary, and I would think there would be plenty of examples over the last several years from which one could pick and choose a parallel. The heat that is under Mr. Imus's ass is coming from a well-heeled source...not any of us peons.

16. I think Imus helped create
the cacophony of cackling conservatives on cable.

I honestly believe he and Howard Stern helped give rise to people like Limbaugh and O'Reilly. They've blurred the lines between news and entertainment. Imus is an opinion leader. He is regularly quoted on "The Note" on abcnews.com and dozens of other news junkie blog sites.

He's done some great interviews and championed some important issues. But he never put his bag of shock-jock tricks away and now the slam dunk zinger, personally insulting your guest and talking smack about anyone you disagree with all pass for serious political discourse in this country.

That trend has done real harm to our democracy. I'm glad to see him go and hope that maybe the tide is turning and we can expect a little more well-mannered discussion from our on-air talent.
