City's plan to ban guns has NRA up in arms!
A weapons plank in a raft of G-20 Summit legislation moving through Pittsburgh City Council drew fire from gun rights advocates yesterday, prompting the National Rifle Association to consider yanking its 2011 annual meeting from the city.

The proposed ordinance would allow police to cite people for carrying a variety of items, from rotten eggs to 37 types of guns, if police perceive an intent to defy their orders.

1. Of course the NRA/GOP is upset.
Guns have more rights than people.

2. I saw the headlines and I thought they meant to ban semi-automatics...
because of the 2 mass shooting incidents in the last year.

All this does is ban guns during G-20 protests. The NRA is clearly being absolutist assholes.

5. Actually Pittsburgh is going to lose this. Legally, they're in the wrong.
Pennsylvania state law supercedes city laws in this situation. It may not be legally fought out by the time the G-20 happens, but if they attempt to charge anybody based on the city's temporary statutes they'll lose in court.

8. What part of pre-emption pittsburg doesn't understand I don't know.
Maybe it is the part about creating a controversy over a law they have no legal authority to enact.

or Maybe it is the part about someone will violate the law simply to get arrested, have all charges dropped because the law is illegal and then counter sue the city (which is already struggling fiscally) for millions of dollars.

I don't know but I do know firearm preemption in PA is airtight like in many other states like VA.

3. It isn't legal for a nonprofit to lobby...
How do those violent thugs get away with it? That has never made sense to me.

6. It's not 37 guns, it's 37 banned types of items.
I don't know what the others are, but I'd suspect stuff like gas masks, bullhorns, etcetera.

9. "from rotten eggs to 37 types of guns"

Of course the reporting could be poor (as usual) but it sounds like the list has lots of items on it, but that 37 of them are "types of guns". I wonder if the list is published anywhere?

11. By invoking a 1993 list of weapons
By invoking a 1993 list of weapons -- from the ArmaLite AR-180 to the Weaver Arms Nighthawk 9 mm -- the legislation could touch a raw nerve with gun rights advocates.
