Mr. Skinner, an emoticon smiley with Karl Marx's beard, for us on the further left would be nice.

"Fingertips of the left arm"??? Okay, what did I miss?
Although I tend to think of Marx as an idealistic impractical twit.

3. There's already this one:

It should be about halfway down the list of avatars, since it's called 'marx', and they're alphabetical.

12. Oh - OK, but I can't see it happening, really
What are the situations you think you'll use it in - to emphasise a point you've made is Marxist? We don't have smileys for any other people, or ideologies - there the 'dem' one: :dem: , but then this is 'Democratic Underground'. There's no 'liberal', 'progressive' etc. smileys.

Also, note that smileys are cartoons, not derived from pictures.

16. Why don't you make it yourself?
Everyone on DU has a computer (or at least access to one), and the essence of Marxism is that the workers own the means of production. So email your fellow Marxists, get busy with MS paint or whatever, create a smiley and show it off here, and then petition for it to be included in the existing list (or just provide a URL where people can easily link to it for their DU posts).

I was just sayin, you descidbed what a smiley is and the Groucho smiley you posted was an example of a smiley.

I'm talking about a yellow face with a Marx beard. Make better sense?

14. No he wants a marxist smiley, not an avatar
Though why, I don't since we don't have any other specific smileys than the democratic donkey.

13. The beard is most appropriate.
After all, Santa was borderline commie. Free toys for all? Well, if you were good, so I guess he was only a pinko socialist. Proud Socialist right here. And surprisingly, I love America, too (but not the 'Stupid' part).

17. Only if we can get a Rene Descartes one as well...
Just like Karl. The man was a philosopher. Not a politician.

Stop acting like a charactature of a left winger...it only encourages the dopes that think that Marxism is a form of government and not a philosophy/tool of political analysis.

19. I happen to believe that we are at the beginning of a global Marxist resurgance.
The worlds capitalistic economy is in freefall.

So, to the dopes I say FUCK OFF.

It's time for the left to put Marxism back on the map.

I don't care what the dopes/Reich Wing think about it.
Just my 2 cents.

Peace

24. Only if the globe has a very short memory.
Capitalism comes close to the brink but always comes back stronger. Marxism has consistently failed. Miserably. Even the largest existing Marxist state - China - has embraced a Capitalist philosophy and only uses it's Marxist roots to maintain control and violate Civil Rights.

Marxism had it's fifteen minutes. It failed.

23. While Marx is probably the greatest economist of all time
Edited on Sat Aug-29-09 10:27 PM by johnaries
Marxism is something entirely different. Remember, this is Democratic Underground, not the Marxist Underground.

We may have a big tent and welcome all ideas and input, our community still has to draw the line in some situations and philosophies. To be fair, Marxism is technically an economic system and not a politically system, but by it's own nature it requires political influence. Although in theory it should be the most democratic system of all, in actual practice it is open to rampant abuse and has led to despotism.

Although Marxism does work well in smaller communities, it has failed consistently in larger government. The Soviet Union, China, North Korea, Cuba - have all led to the suppression of civil rights and the opposite of what Marxism intended to accomplish.

Marxism has proven itself to be a failed philosophy. The most consistently successful philosophy is a blend of socialism (in the case of "essential services") and a well-regulated Caveat Vendor Free Market.

A "Frankenstein" system, indeed. But one balancing the best and worst of seemingly opposing political and economic philosophies.

One that is always evolving and growing, and dynamic. Not the static system envisioned by Marx.

We can only advance by acknowledging Marx, and then leaving him behind.

Therefore, I think a "Marx Smiley" is very inappropriate. It may represent a small group of DU, but no means does it represent the Purpose of DU.

IMHO.
