How come President Obama isn't there?
I know Biden is there, but why isn't the President there?

1. Tweety just asked that and implied his vacation must be more important
and Keith smacked him down and said it's more likely because he wants to leave the burial ceremony to the family to be in the spotlight.

3. I thought it was a private family service
I thought that was previously announced.

4. But VP Biden is there
I don't see how the President would upstage the family, but maybe that is it.

11. Biden has been friends of the Kennedys for decades - would make sense for him, Dodd, Kerry, etc. nt

2. He gave the eulogy. I'm sure he doesn't want to upstage the Kennedys. nt

5. Besides, it was probably a security nightmare.

13. I agree with your assessment
Both the VP and POTUS in one place. In view of the escalation of threats to Obama it's a smart move.

17. oh, of course! I wish Chris or Keith had thought of that
I hope they bring this possibility up later. I'm sure you're right--the POTUS and VP together in one public place would be a security nightmare.

6. The final interrments are usually reserved for the immediate family & invited special friends
the wake , viewing & funeral are the more public events..

To put it in a crass was, look at weddings.. there are showers..the wedding, the reception and then there's the honeymoon... one is more private than the others:evilgrin:

9. It is the service that matters, not so much the interment. E.g., nobody attended the island burial

12. He doesn't want the focus to be on him.
It's not about him, it's about the family. Biden represents him without stealing the spotlight.

16. I think it's been stated above, but for three reasons I can think:
1.) To have both him and Biden in an open setting, together, would be the dream of a wack-nut out there with a weapon.
2.) Having all the Kennedy family, Biden and Obama in an open setting, together, would be the dream of a wack-nut out there with a weapon.
3.) The will be less room for mourners if additional security is needed for Obama, Biden and the Kennedy family.
