I don't know about anyone else, but today's Meet The Press about Ted Kennedy
has been wonderful so far.

A fabulous interview with Maria Shriver, then Kerry and Dodd, and finally Kathleen Kennedy, Bob Schrum and Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Doris believes that Ted was the best Senator in our history.

BTW... Dancing With Rove has handled most of this well.

2. "Best Senator in history."
I agree fully with that. And I do not discount any of the other great Senators. But Ted Kennedy's accomplishments definitely put him at the top of my list.

It's not easy to make George Will look somewhat empathetic ... but she sure did it.

be the case.

10. Interesting.
My first thought was that, without having seen the show, I find it hard to believe that Mr. Gregory could not ruin it. But that is based on my low opinion of him. The more I thought about your post, the more I appreciated its deeper meaning: we should not let anyone distract us from the combined processes of mourning our loss, and celebrating Ted Kennedy's life. And for that, I thank you very much.

12. You're very welcome. And I would suggest watching the re-run
tonight. Maria Shriver's interview was a beautiful tribute to him. All the guests were wonderful - just listen to their words, the love and respect that was so evident.

Gregory was very restrained...he tried a little spinning with Senators Kerry and Dodd, but they weren't having any of it and he backed off.

18. Yep, I saw the actual interviews and then read/heard the media
spin...it's too bad most people will just get the spin version.

The Senators on our side are going to have to become a lot more vocal and forceful now - there is so much revisionist history going on about Senator Kennedy. Hatch and McCain are being afforded too much credibility because of their friendship.

19. so true - the media's bending over backwards to make it all about THEM, though both betrayed Kennedy
and his friendship many times over the years...and will continue to do so for their own craven needs.

13. I have always had enormous respect for Doris Kearns Goodwin.
and, I think she's right. She went through all the characteristics of great Senators identified during JFK's administration by a commission. Teddy has them all. She said he was not a great orator, but I disagree.

I had erroneously classed him as probably distant, but I was clearly very wrong on that one. Apparently, no human being could possibly have made as much contact with people of all kinds as he has, yet he has done it--and we probably still don't know the half of it.

He was not only the greatest Senator. He was also a national treasure.

seems like forever he had been white haired. What a beautiful picture of him and his family. What a hell of a man Ted Kennedy was.

23. Thank you! Watching it now. Will disagree with her on one thing....
She said it was "generous" of the people to leave their ordinary activities to share their time to be there.

I think it was extraordinarily GENEROUS and GRACIOUS of the family to share so much with us, the public! To have cameras in the funeral service was a great act on their part.

I'm grateful.

25. I still can't bring myself to say "goodbye". I was in such denial.... I thought there would be
a miracle, and once again he would triumph.

I'm also grateful to the DUer who collected and posted all those "cartoons" of Teddy.... I showed them to some friends yesterday, and there were copious tears all around.

We poor folk have lost our champion.

27. Bob Schrum told the best story.
He was working on Ted Kennedy's presidential campaign when Carter canceled his debate with Ted due to the hostage crisis, so they suddenly had a free night. Ted told Bob, why don't you invite your parents over to my house for dinner? So Bob called them and his mother's first response was, I can't go, I haven't had my hair done! But his father said, we're going. And that was that. So they go over to the house and Rose is there in a wheelchair, and as Bob told Kerry Kenned at the round table, "your grandmother and my mother bonded for an hour and a half over their devotion to the Virgin Mary." Meanwhile, Ted took Bob and his Dad and his son all around the house, telling them stories of everything that had happened there. He said Ted treated them like he would visiting dignitaries. Then he started crying.
