Angeles Crest Fire--Pics from across the LA basin
This one is from my home; we're at least 40 miles away...

These are from the Kenny Hahn Recreational Area, in Inglewood:

4. I'm not actually sure of the distance...
That was my guess.

We are very safe here...no chance of the fire reaching us.

Thanks, sweetie...

13. Oh, we are fine. But they are reporting that Mt. Wilson and all of the TV, radio & cell phone towers
is about to get hit. We may lose major communications here shortly.

And now the communications.

Freaking awful, all of it.

...who are in danger up there. It's hard to even think about it.

It is wrenching to think of all the lives that could be lost.

16. that's interesting. They were talking about the "convection" effect this morning
there was relatively little wind fanning this fire, but it was growing from this other effect.

The wind is off the ocean, from the west, and the fire is to the NE from me...

The skies are clear here.

We are safe, and thank you...

22. I'm glad to hear you're safe.
I was stationed at the Naval Regional Medical Center '69-'70, then a short course at the Navy Hospital in Long Beach in the '80's.

Calif. is a beautiful state, but the natural disasters are a big price to pay. If it's not fires, it's floods and mudslides, not to mention earthquakes.

CNN was reporting yesterday that there's a lot of fuel feeding those fires because it had been about 70 (?) years since some of those forrests had burned.

Do they do controlled burns there anymore or take herds of goats in to clear out undergrowth and brush?

Stay safe, and keep up posted.

24. My dear dgibby!
Ah, so you're familiar with the area...

We are VERY safe. I live in Manhattan Beach, which is far, far from there...

We're about 20 miles from the LA skyline, and the Angeles Nat'l Forest is beyond that.

I haven't heard about any controlled burns; given the state of CA's economy, I rather doubt it.

Thanks, sweetie...

21. The smoke moved into the San Fernando Valley this AM in a bad way, but
then the winds shifted slightly in the afternoon and we got a reprieve. And it's been well over 100F, too.

23. I feel for you.
Forrest fires scare the bejebus out of me. My hometown in the Alleghany Mountains of western Va. is surrounded by two National Forrests. It would be hard to evacuate without a big head start. I used to have nightmares about that.

Stay safe. Would you be able to evacuate your practice in a hurry if necessary? How close are the fires to you?

35. I'm down in the city, nowhere near any fire danger, at least a mile from the
nearest chaparral. Not to worry.

The only time I have ever had to "evacuate" was last summer when we lost electricity (and AC) for a couple of days in 117F heat. Brought my mascots home and shut the clinic. Sole casualty: one can of Siphotrol Premise Spray for fleas, which didn't like the 110F+ temps indoors and leaked.

Even after the Northridge Quake I was only closed one day until out power came back on.

20. Those aren't thunderheads, either. Those are smoke-caused, and
have to be at least 25k ft high, from my best guess looking at them with the naked eye.

Out here by the beach, you could...

Most of the time, anyway.

The Santa Ana winds (out of the NE) would be trouble.
