I'm sick of the way you've corrupted the public discourse. The way you've made it acceptable to hurl any insult you like at public officials. The way you blame us for the current atmosphere of hatred by accusing us of starting it with hating Bush. Like Bush didn't come on the heels of eight years of your tireless efforts to destroy Clinton by any means necessary, like Bush didn't give us good reason to complain. A couple of posters on a website compared Bush to Hitler and you've used it as free license to compare Obama to Hitler 24/7 and I'm sick of your hypocrisy, where it's acceptable to say shit about Obama that you would have had an apopletic fit (and did) if anythign remotely similar had been said about your guys. Keith Olbermann calls Cheney a fascist when he was actually using fascist tactics and you think that gives you the freedom to call Obama a fascist, socialist, Marxist constantly for no reason at all. Obama is as centreist and as "free markets uber alles" as anyone the Dems have sent to Washington in years. Here (Britain), the Labour party, which was explicitely socialist for most of it's existance, is now outright corporatist. I think, in the rush of "defeating" communism, the West may have fallen victim to the fallacy of the excluded middle and forgotten that there is anything between dog-eat-dog unregulated capitalism and outright communism.

That decision, coupled with their ownership and dominance of a few Mouth=Breathing radio hosts and their Party TV outlet (FUX News) makes it possible to drive the message home again and again to a lazy and intellectually incurious populace. My conclusion is the same as yours - FUCK 'EM!

Great rant... I wish I could have ranted it better myself, but I don't believe I could have added anything rantier.

I will say, however, that I am one of those (somewhat rare?) Democrats who believe in the right to bear arms, having a concealed weapons permit. With rants like this, I might recommend those outspoken Democrats and others who have been pro-gun control to reconsider the advantages of their second amendment rights.

The way things seems to be developing, those against whom you have ranted more than likely can out-gun you... is that the next phase of the development of our Democratic Republic?

I'm actually pro-gun rights myself (despite being British where all handguns are banned), subject to some sensible restrictions (and I still think one should be a basic safety test).

It would be great if every American began to challenge what the hell we are

Now then. First off, fascism and oligarchy are NOT leftist political systems. These words have distinct meanings, learn them and love them. Both are, by definition, rightist systems (extreme right, in fascism's case). "Fascism" does NOT equal "authoritarian". All fascist systems are authoritarian but not all authoritarian systems are fascist. An authoritarian system is one which abuses human and/or political rights, fascism is a specific set of reasons for doing so.

Secondly, Hitler was NOT a leftist. Stalin was and yes, when you get to the extremes of the political spectrum, the actions of both sides look very similar but their reasons are very different (see above).

Thirdly, the right and left are NOT defined by "more government" and "smaller government". That's just plain wrong. No leftist wants more government just for the hell of it, that's just bullshit.

Fourthly, stream of consciousness writing is difficult to understand. Have a thought, start a paragraph, explain your thought and then start a new paragraph.

Finally, this is DemocraticUnderground. While that doesn't necessarily mean you have to agree with everything Obama does (Lord knows, I don't), it does mean that random baseless accusations like "cult of personality" have no place here.

The "official date" for the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe was November 9, 1989, the day the Berlin Wall opened. Reagan wasn't president then. The evil but clueless GHWB through neglect managed to let the Soviet Union die on the vine.

Ronald Reagan extended the lifespan of communism by at least eight years, because he provided the Soviet Politburo with the convenient bogeyman they so desperately needed. If Carter would have won reelection the Soviets would have been gone in, at latest, 1983 because Carter's policy was just to stand back and let them go under. Reagan forced massive Soviet defense expenditures that managed to sustain communism long after it should have been gone.

My view of it all is Soviet communism collapsed because the Soviet people were tired of wearing "Ohio Jean" (the most popular brand of blue jeans in the USSR was "Ohio Jean"--with all the fashion-forward sensibility of Lower Sandusky, Ohio Jean wore like a cast-iron frying pan and was nearly as flexible) and wiping their asses on toilet paper with metal shavings in it. Reagan fucked that up.

Soviet Communism had one huge flaw: no foreign trade to speak of. They only traded with their client states. China figured that shit out quick: Chinese communism can last forever if they want it to because the Chinese are trading with every country in the world.

Now, if Reagan would have just set back and let the Sovs collapse of their own accord, which was gonna happen, all would have been swell. But no--he hadda prop up every tinhorn dictator he could get his hands on, and he fucked up the whole thing.

The Repukes say Reagan spent the Soviet Union into bankruptcy. He spent the United States into bankruptcy too, but you never hear about that.

I've argued lots of reasons why outsourcing is a competitive disaster for us, however, the link between China's political longevity and trade, and our out sourcing mantra is something I've never really considered. Democrats and republicans seem determined to sell off every bit of America piece by piece like those M&A guys on wall street who buy and sell companies only for the purpose of selling off the pieces and lining their own pockets.

I also argue vigorously that George the Second deliberately started a new cold war era with the old Soviets and should be remembered as the US president who helped these old soviet birds rediscover their nationalistic roots. Putin has responded to US aggression and warmongering in the only way he knows how. Soviet style.

You are quite correct that GWB restarted the Cold War. Unfortunately, he didn't limit himself to the Soviets--with his "old Europe and new Europe" comment, he attempted to pull some of America's oldest and dearest allies--especially France, who was our very first ally--into a cold war against us. The installed president of the United States sexually harassing the elected chancellor of Germany was not the finest moment in American foreign policy. But she probably eked out what passes for an apology after she got him ripped at the G-8 meeting and we now have a president she likes, so things are better between our nations now.

I would partially disagree with 1.1. I think the right's true allegiance is more to money and class than to race but I think we can give a very firm YES to 1.0. The right have tried to take exclusive control of the flag for use as a campaign ornament.

If history is any sort of indicator at all, I think a lot of American liberals will go ex-pat. It's either that or get cut down like animals.

In terms of sheer numbers, the hardcore right are in the minority but from my point of view here (in Britain), it seems that they are vastly more motivated. Look, I don't like to throw this word around much because I know too well what it means but what we are seeing here is the formative steps of fascism: A nationalist faction, emerging from a mostly rural and.or uneducated populace, calling for a return to some imagined golden age and willing to embrace violence to do so. Here, we have a long history of getting out in the streets and fighting them (see The 43 Group or the Battle Of Cable Street) but there, it seems that people are unwilling to actually fight.

A friend of mine happens to be solidly RW although now that he's out of power he decries the behavior both parties and all government, as though there's no difference between right and left.

Apparently, someone on this thread thought it was good enough, passed it on to him and he read it on air (removing teh cuss words, naturally).

My other half did a Google search on my username for some reason and discovered that this rant has been posted to a few blogs and the FREEPERS posted it on their site to mock, well, me mostly and instead of debunking my points, they just restate their lies ever louder.

...you seem to have mistaken this for a policy analysis. I have written such analysis of policies but that's not what this is. This is an outright rant, me expressing frustration by screaming insults. Why this one went viral when the others didn't, I do not know.

This is the kind of post that makes me feel great about this country. Free speech at it's best.
