Non-Drinkers Report More Depression
Non-Drinkers Report More Depression
Moderate Alcohol Use May Fight Some Depression

People who don't drink alcohol are more likely to have depression than those who do, according to a new study.

The study was based on data from more than 38,000 people in Norway.

Those who said that they had not had a drink in two weeks more likely than moderate drinkers to report symptoms of depression, according to a news release on the work.

People who called themselves abstainers were at the highest risk of depression.

Other factors, such as age, physical health problems and number of close friends could explain some but not all of this increased risk.

3. Queue: The Three Jolly Coachmen
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 09:22 AM by ixion
One, two, and three jolly coachmen sat at an English tavern.
Three jolly coachmen sat at an English tavern,
And they decided, and they decided, and they decided to have another flagon.
Landlord, fill the flowing bowl until it doth run over. (Repeat)
For tonight we merr-I be, (Repeat twice)
Tomorrow we'll be sober. (What!)

Here's to the man who drinks dark ale and goes to bed quite mellow! (Repeat)
He lives as he ought to live (Repeat twice)
He'll die a jolly good fellow! (Ha! Ha! Ha!)
Here's to the man who drinks water pure and goes to bed quite sober. (Repeat)
He falls as the leaves do fall, (Repeat twice)
He'll die before October! (Ho! Ho! Ho!)

Here's to the maid who steals a kiss and runs to tell her mother. (Repeat)
She's a foolish, foolish thing. (Repeat twice)
For she'll not get another. (Pity!)
Here's to the maid who steals a kiss and stays to steal another. (Repeat)
She's a boon to all man kind. (Repeat twice)
For soon she'll be a mother!

Thought it seemed appropriate. :)

4. Anything over 0.05 BAC for me results in 48 hours of noticeable depression.
I'm VERY familiar with "the dark side" and ceased drinking about 20 years ago when I discovered it had a depressant impact. About 2 years ago, after suffering two TIAs, my doctor advised a glass of red wine with dinner. Since then, I've carefully calibrated what I drink and now limit it to two drinks in three hours. Anything more and I CLEARLY feel the tendrils of depression ... and I'm outa there.

Norway might not be the best context for such a study, since the latitude invites S.A.D.

11. I'm much the same way
Every so often beer sounds really good (I like the taste) and after 2 or 3 I feel like I'm swaddled in a leaden blanket, my head congealed. None of the lightness and free association of my youth, just sort of a graying of experience. It's odd how my chemistry changed so much.

12. Yup. I think I drank the quota for at least two lifetimes by the time I was 45.

I was the drinking champion of my fraternity -- both 'distance' (Cove-to-the-Coast run) and 'sprint' (anchor man on the interfraternity chug-a-lug team). After the Cove-to-the-Coast run on a Friday night (start at 9pm, 36 bars by 1am, 1 drink in each, on foot), it wasn't until Monday that I was hungover. At the time I decided to go 'cold turkey' I noted that I probably hadn't had more than 2 or 3 days in the prior 15-20 years when I didn't have at least one drink in the evening -- often just a beer. I never had a 'personality change' when drinking since I (deeply) eschew repression. (I usually do and say what I feel -- WYSIWYG.) So, it wasn't a problem continuing to join friends at the bars and lounges on the occasional evening ... I just switched to non-alcoholic drinks (tonic and orange juice, usually) and became the designated driver.

The taste of the 2nd beer (or wine) DEFINITELY gets worse ... and the 3rd worse still. Thus, I just savor that single drink -- Guinness or Merlot -- only sometimes followed by a second if the occasion lasts 3 hours or more. (Only with meals.)

13. Oof
I definitely hit it hard for a time. I remember being peeved at friends who thought "only" a few cases of beer would be enough. But I couldn't match that :)

I was also blessed with hangover resistance, which made it all the more bewildering when drink began to make me more febrile than mellow. I don't miss it, it's just strange. Especially getting mistaken for a teetotaler, which I'm not (musicians get a lot of drinks bought for them and I almost always pass).

Become drunks, then alcoholics, dry out then find out they were depressed all along and finally treat that.

10. I haven't had alcohol since I was 3
When I thought my dad's beer was pop. I'm 37 now. I don't think I'm depressed, but maybe the mass quantities of caffeine from Pepsi offset it. :)
