Did anyone here have relatives in Ireland in 1911? New online searchable census.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

A new database for Irish genealogy and research was yesterday released online by the National Library of Ireland. The free searchable version of the April 1911 family census contains information from the 32 counties and is searchable using any combination of name, surname, age, sex and place. It gives access not only to a database of information but to images of the original census forms which would have been handwritten by the head of the household.

2. My grandmother fled Ireland in 1908.
"It's a beautiful place to starve.", said she.

3. LOL! The famine was over then by 59 years - so she wouldn't have gone hungry!

5. My grandfather told us stories of his grandfather, who told him
the one thing he'd remember his entire life was living in Ireland as a child and being hungry the entire time, before emigrating to this country. This would have been in the 1880's.

He said he never had a full stomach until he came to America, and was astounded at all the food available.

Rent farmers barely grew enough to pay the landlords, let alone anything to feed their families.

7. That's true, tenant farmers with hateful landlords paid exorbitant rent....
...it left them little to feed their familes with. But then the Irish National Land League was born and fought for them - ultimately they were successful.

6. Plenty o'poverty though.
My grandfather came over long after the famine and he was well acquainted with hunger.

9. There doesn't need to be a famine to starve.
And, in Mayo plenty of people were going hungry.

12. True, the western seaboard in Ireland suffered, mainly due to poor farming land and high rents.
