Sexual curiosity normal for most children
Sexual curiosity normal for most children

SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Many sexual behaviors are within the range of normal child development and should not be a cause for concern, a behavioral scientist in Texas said.

More than half of all children will engage in some form of sexual behavior before age 13, Dr. Nancy Kellogg of the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, said.

Many of their sexual behaviors result from curiosity or testing of personal boundaries, Kellogg and a co-author wrote in the journal Pediatrics in a story published Monday.

What parents and teachers need to watch for, however, is any conduct that is "persistently intrusive, coercive ... or abusive," Kellogg said, adding neglect, domestic violence or exposure to lewd media content all are linked to sexual behavior problems.

6. OK the top one... point taken.
But did he go to prison? No... so there is no reason for such laughable hyperbole.

As for the second two, those kids needed some help... that's doesn't seem like normal experimentation IMO.

The third one seemed pretty normal IMO.

10. Not prison, but there are some ridiculously harsh penalties
most because laws have failed to keep up with the times. One of the best examples is teens that have been forced to register as sex offenders for "crimes" like sexting (sending nude or semi-nude photos of themselves or others via text/photo messaging).

12. Yep
I would have considered it news if children were found to have no sexual curiosity.

4. It's just that the "curiosity" part is much less curious these days.
When I was a kid and wanted to see boobies it was an extremely difficult feat. The search was half the fun.

Today, full nudity is just a short Google away.

7. When I was a kid it wasn't at all difficult to see "boobies."
Our family culture didn't have many inhibitions about nudity -- it was some odd mix of scandinavian naturism and fine art. Full nudity was unremarkable except when it was funny. I remember my skinny dipping grandpa running naked through the yard of my great grandma's house being chased by a mean old rooster. I can't stop laughing even as I write this, it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. If you've ever been chased by a rooster you KNOW you don't want your unprotected dangly bits anywhere near one!

13. I remember that.
The epic quest for nudie mags and to get under the shirt of the redhead in the next class.

Kids today are spoiled, I tells ya!

8. When I was about 10, I found my mother's gynecological nursing

text from her days at nursing school. I got a pretty good education from that. Then, a couple of years later, I turned up a 40's era sex manual for married couples. That took care of the rest.

That was in the 50s. My mom recently told me that I hadn't really found them. She had put them out where I was sure to find them, rather than having "The Talk." Since I was a very avid reader, it was a cinch that I'd read them. I learned a lot that served me well in my teen years. I knew stuff that even my girlfriends didn't know. Good times!

11. When I was a kid, my friend and I would look
through his dad's medical book on horrid sexual diseases and disfigurements. This was after we'd gotten bored perusing his playboy collection, which I suppose would've been considered "lewd media content" back then. I've turned out a sexually healthy adult who definitely practices safe sex.
