8. I am inclined to believe age may be slowing him down and travel
is not easy for the elderly.

11. Me too. What some here seem to forget
is that only a few short weeks ago Teddy was boating with his family. Now he's dead.

Age and illness progresses very rapidly in the elderly. People want to point to Bush Sr parachuting a few weeks ago on his birthday...so what?

My late MIL was sitting out on our deck one spring enjoying the uncharacteristic warmth. Less than two weeks later she was dead.

I don't like Bush Sr any more than the rest of them, but people need to lay off the snarky comments. The man is old, and, like you said, it isn't easy for the elderly....

13. He went skydiving to celebrate his 85th birthday in June, so
apparently he's well enough to travel. Being a no-show more than likely had more to do with personal animosity than old age. Besides, Carter was there and he and old man Bush were born the same year. If he had wanted to be there, he would have been there.

15. Wow...people just don't get it
Just because someone was well enough to travel in June that doesn't mean they'll be well enough to travel two months later. Especially someone his age.

Anyone who thinks old people don't deteriorate quickly has obviously never seen it happen. In that case, they should thank their lucky stars and hope they never do see it happen.

I'm not saying that's what's happening, but it's a possibility. One that many people aren't willing to consider, instead resorting to some pretty nasty speculation.

18. I personally watched my dad go downhill very fast, so don't make any
assumptions about what I've seen or haven't seen. Chimp senior released a statement saying chimp jr. would "amply and well represent" the family at the funeral. He offered no further explanation - never offered up an excuse that he was too frail or sick to travel. You can speculate however much you care to, and I'll do the same.

24. so if your dad had done the same...
...only issued a statement before not attending an event, without explanation, and a bunch of people accused him of being/doing/thinking all sorts of rotten mean and evil things, that would have been OK? You would not have jumped in to defend him?

I would think that the experience of seeing your own dad decline so quickly would impart a measure of wisdom and compassion to your speculation on why Bush Sr didn't attend the funeral, but there ya go. The world is made up of all kinds of people.

12. My suspicion is
that guilt had something to do with his not being there. After all he is to me a very likely person who was involved in the assassination of Ted's brother.

17. My first thought was "who gives a fuck" but he is getting old and the
proceedings will be long and in hot muggy weather. The heat would remind him of where he is going after he passes through the reeds.

28. At Walker's Point with Barbara.
According to the official statement they decided that Dim Son would amply represent the family.

Their limo driver could have driven them to the funeral in less than two hours -- it's about a 90 minute drive from Kennebunkport to Boston with no traffic delays.
