Is there a reason Democrats in Congress Do Not Fight Back Against FOX News & Limbaugh?
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 11:00 AM by Vinnie From Indy
It is almost beyond belief that Democrats seemingly have not lifted a finger to address the gargantuan right-wing media machine. Where are the hearings on media consolidation? Where are the hearings on the massive Iraq War misinformation campaigns of FOX News and the mainstream media? It would seem that there are dozens of reasons to hold hearings about the media in America today and yet there seems to be hardly anyone in Congress willing to do so. This lack of attention to the saturation of America with propaganda and lies in service of the right-wing and corporate interests should make all Democrats ask why.

It is my opinion that the DLC Democrats and other corporately owned Democrats preferred being out of power. It gave them the perfect cover to serve their corporate masters while still appearing to support progressive and Democratic ideals. Now that Democrats control the Congress and White House it seems strange that they would not make major efforts to examine the state of the highly concentrated ownership of media in America today.

It could very well be that little or no action will take place in Congress to address the concentration of media ownership and other media issues because many Democrats actually want the propaganda to continue. For example, it seems the only hope for some Democrats to avoid voting for a single payer or workable public option and outing themselves as being wholly owned by special interests is to let the propaganda machines of FOX News and Limbaugh do their nefarious work and convince millions of Americans to believe a laundry list of lies about healthcare reform.

In short, when will Democrats in Congress do something to expose and attack the likes of Rupert Murdoch and the rest of the corporately owned mainstream media in America today. And, when will we call them out for not doing it?

1. First Amendment concerns.
I think Democrats are generally loathe to have government stand in judgment of the content of the media because of First Amendment concerns. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't be concern about, and hearings on, media consolidation. But I think there is some trickiness in relating to the particular content of media as opposed to more generally raising concern about the amount of local news programming (not the content).

2. Agreed
I still believe that there are dozens of reasons to hold hearings that do not touch on content.

3. Very plausible, but cowardice, complicity & corruption also play a part.

5. There is a Bill Clinton saying.. "Don't pick a fight with those that buy ink by the barrel"
I think "Owns their own microphone" could fill in there also.
