Totally Hysterical.

Today 11:35 AM|Juli Weiner

The dispatching of interns to college campus for purposes of digging up politicians’ old papers, newspaper columns, and self-effacing submissions to really radical but also really, like, awesome poetry ‘zines is a sacred tradition of journalism. And it is this custom that has made it possible for America to now enjoy the senior thesis of Virginia gubernatorial candidate/former attorney general Bob McDonnell, a 93-page musing on the fairer sex that is now forcing McDonnell to perform the PR equivalent of fellatio on fornicators, cohabitators, working mothers and other types of fallen women.

McDonnell didn’t take too kindly to feminists in college, especially not employed feminists, who bitch about equal pay and then use their riches to buy condoms in order to have hypersexualized types of sex. In other words:

He argued for covenant marriage, a legally distinct type of marriage intended to make it more difficult to obtain a divorce. … <H>e criticized federal tax credits for child care expenditures because they encouraged women to enter the workforce.

“Further expenditures would be used to subsidize a dynamic new trend of working women and feminists that is ultimately detrimental to the family by entrenching status-quo of nonparental primary nurture of children,” he wrote.

He went on to say feminism is among the “real enemies of the traditional family.”

Sagely, McDonnell is now characterizing the college paper as an “academic exercise.” This is intended dissuade you, the crying woman, from reading too much into it, as you are wont to do.

1. I didn't know much in college.
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 11:44 AM by DefenseLawyer
College should be a place for fleshing out ideas, even bad ones. I'd be more interested in probing his current views.

2. Chances are they're not much less paleolithic than they were in college.
It's a long way to walk from Limbaugh-inspired woman-hatred to moderation and open-mindedness.

I have no doubt that he is still an idiot. I just see a bad precedent in digging into things people did in college as a way of judging their fitness for office.

8. By now you must have seen the other responses.
There's no excuse for what the guy wrote. We're talking about his *thesis*. Not just a dumb paper for a dumb class.

11. I'm not going to make an exception to my premise because he's an idiot
whose views I disagree with. If I choose to judge this clown on what he did in college, then I have to delve into what everyone did in college. It seems like a massive waste of time. I have no idea what is purpose or goal was for choosing his thesis topic. It was probably because he's an idiot but I don't know. I'm not going to go back and look at everything everyone did in college in order to ascertain what they were thinking at the time, whether they were expressing their own views or playing devil's advocate or sucking up to a nutty professor or anything else. The fact that he went to Regent University should be a clue that he's a crank, I'll leave it at that. I don't care what anyone did in college. Period.

15. Your college thesis is fair game.
Most people don't have theses so out of left field they disqualify them from public office. Those who do maybe should be disqualified from public office.

20. So when the right wing went crazy over Michelle Obama's thesis
and said (quite preposterously) it proved she was a scary, militant radical, I assume you thought that was reasonable? You must have applauded their diligence in finding such "damning" material, what with it being fair game and all.

2) It didn't hurt the campaign anyway.

3. He was 34 years old when he wrote this and only a couple of years before his first run for office.

From the actual WaPo article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/29/AR2009082902434.html?sid=ST2009082902758

"After four years in the Army and the start of a management career with a Fortune 500 health supply company, McDonnell moved with his wife, Maureen, and two young daughters from a suburb of Kansas City, Mo., to Virginia Beach, where he enrolled in a public policy master's program at what was then called CBN University. The school was founded by Pat Robertson and named for his Christian Broadcasting Network."

Best rejoinder of the day. There's quite a difference between a 22 year old writing a college thesis and a 34 year old man arguing the same nonsense.

Then set out to implement the ideas from it when he got into the state legislature.

9. Republican men remain "youthful", and subject to
"youthful indiscretions", well into their 60's..They have discovered the fountain of youth:)

Democratic party men, however, "mature" at month-2 of kindergarten, and every word uttered, every deed, is worthy of public scrutiny, and deserving of investigation and full explanation:)

17. Update: Deeds Campaign Slams McDonnell's Right-Wing Thesis
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 02:41 PM by BurtWorm
As "Blueprint For Governing"

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/08/deeds-campaign-slams-mcdonnells-right-wing-thesis-as-blueprint-for-governing.php?ref=fpb

Eric Kleefeld | August 31, 2009, 12:01PM

Democrats are now pouncing hard in the Virginia gubernatorial race against Republican nominee Bob McDonnell, who was revealed by the Washington Post to have laid out a meticulous religious-right political agenda in his thesis 20 years ago at Regent University.

...

On a conference call with reporters just now, the campaign of Democratic nominee Creigh Deeds laid into McDonnell.

On the call, Deeds senior adviser Mo Elleithee dismissed the push-back by McDonnell, who said that "Like everybody, my views on many issues have changed as I have gotten older," and that the paper was "simply an academic exercise and clearly does not reflect my views."

But Elleithee would have none of it. "This paper, which was written when McDonnell was 34 years old and months before he began his first campaign for office, this paper served as a blueprint for governing," said Elleithee. "This paper drew out very explicitly his vision of a role for government...and it went beyond a personal philosophy, it had a 15-point action plan for how to implement that philosophy. And as the news accounts have said over the last 24 hours, he spent his public life working to implement those 15 points on that action plan."

Elleithee also pointed out that 54% of Virginians are women -- and that a "full assault on the role of women in the workplace" would not go over well with voters.

"I think a lot of people out there are surprised when they see what Bob McDonnell's record is and what his philosophy is on governing, because it's very different from his image and how he's portrayed," Elleithee said. "Let me be clear, Bob McDonnell says in this thesis that he knows that mainstream America isn't ready to elect someone with this agenda."

19. Wait up! HOLD THE PRESSES!.
54% of Virginians are women! That means only 100 minues 54.... carry the one.... 46% are men.

54%/46% = 1.17

There are 1.17 women for every man in Virginia. Something doesn't add up I should have gotten a laid a lot more growing up if these stats are true. I demand a recount!
