Fishermen (DU'ers?) survived on beer and crackers

Fishermen survived on beer and crackers

BLESSING, Texas, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Three fishermen say country-boy survival skills got them through eight days atop a capsized boat off the coast of Texas.

The three were rescued late Saturday by a passing pleasure boat nearly 180 miles southwest of Matagorda, Texas.

"It's nothing short of a miracle of God," said James Phillips, 30, owner of Born Again Repair, a boat sales and repair facility in Blessing, Texas, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Phillips and two friends, Curt Hall, 28, and Tressell Hawkins, 42, left Matagorda Aug. 21 aboard Phillips' 23-foot catamaran. About 80 miles offshore, the boat took on water and rolled, cutting all radio contact.

"Then us country boys went into survival mode," Phillips told the Chronicle in an interview Sunday.

The men dove under the boat to recover a case of beer, crackers and potato chips. A hose connected to a tank gave them fresh water, though it tasted like gasoline, and a tarp shielded them from the sun. Sharks circled the boat as the men hallucinated about people bringing food and water.

12. Beer and ale were drank in England instead of water because the water
was unsafe until nineteenth century. The dark stouts were considered especially nutritious because they were considered to have iron. It seems you got ale and porridge for breakfast and drank through the day. I don't know how buzzed people were. Maybe they got used to it and were able to function.

9. 3 friends of mine were adrift for 3 days in the gulf - they had beer and bait
Actually they ate pretty well, if not very much. They had lots of beer and as a result of the melted ice plenty of water too but what they had to eat, other than a few cans of beenie-weenies, was fresh shrimp they had brought for bait. They cooked it on the heat of a Coleman Lantern. They didn't have a radio on the boat (which was on its maiden voyage when the electrical system burnt up) and drifted until they came ashore north of Flamingo against the everglades. They were badly sunburned despite the top on the boat and they were just ate up by mosquitoes, but other than that they were OK.

11. Add cheese and some cold cuts, and it was probably a pretty typical
weekend diet. Missed them hot wings, though....
