Grassley: I’m Working For The “Defeat” Of “Obamacare”

Ezra Klein gets a hold of a striking fundraising letter from Chuck Grassley to his constituents that will make it even easier for Dems to claim Grassley is not negotiating in good faith towards a bipartisan health care “compromise.”

The letter says starkly that Grassley is working for the “defeat” of “Obamacare,” the shorthand description of the health care proposal used by ardent reform foes:

I had to rush you this Air-Gram today to set the record straight on my firm and unwavering opposition to government-run health care.

And ask your immediate support in helping me defeat “Obama-care.”

I’m sure you’ve been following this issue closely. If the legislation sponsored by Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the House of Representatives and Chairman Ted Kennedy in the Senate is passed it would be a pathway to a government takeover of the health care system. It would turn over control of your health care decisions to a federal bureaucrat … and take it away from you and your personal physician.

Two quick points. First: Though this is vague, Grassley appears to be indicting all of Obama-care (whatever he means by that) as opposed to specific provisions.

Second, Grassley is also broadly condemning the proposal from Kennedy’s committee — which includes a number of provisions that Grassley hasn’t thus far described as dealbreakers — as a potential “government takeover” of health care. This leads, again, to the question: Is there any reform proposal that Grassley is willing to support?

I’ve asked Grassley’s spokesperson for clarification of what, precisely, about Obamacare and Kennedy’s proposal he’s working to “defeat.” I’ll let you know if I get an answer.

Frankly, I don't care if we have to do it by ourselves because anything that might come out of a "compromise" with Republicans is probably not going to be all that great, particularly since I'm nearly positive that a precondition to "compromise" with Republicans over HCR will almost certainly be that the PO be dropped.

5. I'd like to make some comments about Grassley and the other
bought and paid for "representatives of the people", but I'm afraid that it would just be one expletive after another. The best thing that I can say is I wish he would just go to hell.

8. Democracy for America running ad against Grassley, See it here
No matter what politicians in Washington DC say, Democrats AND Republicans back home want the choice of a public health insurance option.

Meet Kevin Shilling from Iowa. Kevin has voted for Reagan, Nixon, George W. Bush and Republican Senator Chuck Grassley. Kevin also supports the choice of a public option.

Our new ad, with our partners at the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, is called "Main Street Bipartisanship." It features Kevin and sends a clear message to senators working to kill reform: When 76% of Americans want something done in Washington Senators, like Chuck Grassley in Iowa, better listen if they want to be reelected in 2010.

http://dfa2.convio.net/site/R?i=a-PxQ942Y87j3udEFPpPmg..">WATCH THE AD AND TAKE ACTION NOW

Real healthcare reform is in danger because Senators like Democrats Max Baucus in Montana and Kent Conrad in North Dakota keep stalling reform waiting for so-called "bipartisanship."

But in DC, "bipartisanship" doesn't mean policies that Republican and Democratic voters back home support. It means, "whatever watered-down reform insurance industry funded Republicans in Washington want."

Chuck Grassley, the main Senate Republican negotiator, has taken over $2.9 million from health and insurance interests that oppose reform. He's even said he won't support a public option because it would beat private insurance in the marketplace!

That's not bipartisanship, Senator Grassley, that's choosing insurance companies over the American people. It's up to us to make sure every senator knows what at stake if they water-down reform in the name of false bipartisanship.

12. That $2.9 million in bribes--OOPS--donations to Grassley
has certainly paid off, hasn't it? Perhaps the people who have elected this man in the past will send him packing next time. It's obvious what it takes to get his support, to hell with what's best for the people who elected him.
