Friends of Animals calls for Idaho potato boycott after Gov vows to participate in wolf massacre
August 24, 2009
Priscilla Feral

Even though wolves were only taken off the Endangered Species List in Idaho in May, 2009, Idaho Gov. Butch Otter is not only endorsing the proposed trophy hunt this fall, he’s vowed to participate in it. He told a group of hunters, “I’m prepared to bid for the first ticket to shoot a wolf myself.” The wolf hunt is an apparent effort to boost elk populations for hunters to slaughter, and will begin on September 1, 2009. The permit to kill a wolf costs $11.50—with 220 wolves set to be killed statewide.

Equally dismaying is the fact that Gov. Otter claims to “respect” wolves—making the nonsensical claim, in an interview with The Idaho Statesman, “You can still hate them and respect their cunning and their place in nature.”

Friends of Animals’ president, Priscilla Feral says, “Gov. Otter’s enthusiasm for wolf killing not only demonstrates a complete lack of conscience and understanding of the word ‘respect,’ it shows a lack of respect for nature and the ecosystem; wolves don’t need Gov. Otter—or anyone else—to manage them.”

Friends of Animals is calling for a boycott of potatoes grown in Idaho—the largest producer in the United States. One-third of all potatoes are grown in Idaho. Feral adds: “As long as Idaho is in the business of killing wolves, the nature-respecting public should stop buying potatoes there.” Look for potatoes grown in Maine, Colorado, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington and other states.

1. Most states allow hunting of some kind
In Pennsylvania you can hunt deer. Here in Florida, you can even hunt alligators. Why should Idaho be singled out?

2. Apart from the disgusting nature of hunting, the Idahoans will be killing animals to
ensure that there are other animals for them to kill. That is beyond fucked up.

Also - are you endorsing a "rush to the bottom" in justification? Just because other states also allow the
murder of innocent animals does not mean that it is OK for Idaho to do so.

5. How does that differ from any other state which allows hunting?
Many other states allow the hunting of predators. How many states allow the hunting of bears?

9. Idaho (and others) are not "culling the herd" for preservation of the species sake.
They are doing the slaughter to make sure other sadists have enough targets for their own kill-thrill.

To me, that is sickness squared.

Again - just because others do it does not make it OK. Some Middle-Eastern nations (among other) legally allow "honor killings" of daughters who disgrace them in various ways (e.g., having sex, wearing western clothing, etc.). Should we OK that here simply because they do?

16. That's just silly...
Wolves are wild animals. They need to kill other animals in order to survive. Some people do it for fun or trophy. Quite different.

17. Wolves kill wildlife because they need to eat, not for the
pleasure of killing. Few humans in this country kill wildlife because they require the animal for sustinence, Freddie.

When do we get to start the people hunt?

After all, they're the greatest predator.

40. You can eat deer and alligator.
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 08:18 PM by juno jones
Wolves are higher predators. You can only trophy them. Unless you like gamy dog.

Higher predators are necessary in a healthy ecosphere, and the blood lust of wolfhunters is sickening.

I've lived with a wolf. Most extrordinary creature I have ever encountered in a life of animals. It was not my pet but a packmate and a friend.

7. I'm no hunter, never have been
which makes me sort of an oddity here in Wyoming. But it is Idaho's right to manage their wildlife resources as they see fit, as it is yours to not purchase products made there. Good luck harming them economically.

I can't imagine killing anything, and I can't fathom how they can. I get upset if I smoosh a bug. Maybe I'm just overly sensitive, or I need therapy. Who knowns, but it's how I feel.

It's rare that I personally eat meat. Also, I never said I was stopping anyone from hunting, I just don't like the idea of it.

You're being awfully critical for someone who just said they don't hunt either.

23. I buy potatoes from my local farmer's market.
But, I'm sure my rescue group would appreciate the article. Many dogs require homemade diets and we buy potatoes in bulk.

The fact that they're killing wolves to increase the elk population for humans to kill is what bothers me. Wolves are predators. It's going to happen. Farms can take precautions to protect their herd from an attack, but wild elk is fair game.

28. Of course, Idaho's potato farmers probably have little to do with the policy, since nobody
believes wolves will dig up potatoes: the issue is probably driven by Idaho's livestock ranchers, who are likely to take the view wolves and coyotes cut into their profits

So it might make more sense to boycott (say) Idaho beef, instead of antagonizing a bunch of potato farmers who have nothing to do with this

45. Okay. Did we, or did we not attack Iraq, and was, or was not, the rationale given at
the time that Iraq was behind 9/11? Yes, that is what happened. But Iraq was not, in reality, behind 9/11 at all, so attacking it was badly misdirected. See the parallel with Idaho potato farmers here? They had nothing to do with the Governor of Idaho's policy on shooting wolv—oh, fuck it.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing an $80,000 civil penalty against C.L. “Butch” Otter and Charles Robnett for the unlawful discharge of dredged and/or fill material into a side channel of the Boise River, in violation of the federal Clean Water Act. EPA’s complaint alleges that Mr. Otter excavated and filled in 2.7 acres of wetlands on his property without proper authorization by an Army Corps of Engineers permit.

Mr. Otter owns property on the Boise River near Star, Idaho and Charles Robnett is a Nampa contractor. In the complaint filed today, EPA alleges that in November, 1998, Mr. Robnett, on Mr. Otter’s behalf, used heavy equipment to dredge and fill certain wetlands and a stream channel on Otter’s property.

According to Chuck Clarke, EPA Regional Administrator in Seattle, this is not the first time Mr. Otter has run afoul of wetlands protection statutes in Idaho.

“Through this action, we’re hoping to send a clear message,” said Clarke. “Mr. Otter has received two previous cease-and-desist orders from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for unauthorized wetlands work on his property, but for some reason they apparently had no effect. Idaho’s wetlands are too valuable to be treated with such little regard.”

43. Sorry to my friends who hunt...but sport hunting is not ethically tenable...
There is no ethical justification for killing and torturing animals for sport...

I understand there are questions of overpopulation of deer for example in urban population centers...and I understand the need for limited kills to control those populations. In those cases trained snipers should be sent to do the job (as is done on park land where I live). The meat is then donated to homeless shelters...

Having said all that...I don't think punishing Idaho potato farmers is really fair, or would be effective...
