Poll question: Disney purchasing Marvel Comics...Good or Bad?

I don't like this at all even though I stopped reading comics ages ago. Now we have a company which we know participates in propaganda to mislead the People both through their own productions and through ABC-TV, especially ABC News, which will be able to control the message of some 5000 comic characters and which will continue to shape the minds of our young ones. While Disney has a decent stable of "kid" fare, comics are different in that it is worlds away from the content and message of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or The Chronicles of Narnia. I personally remember reading Captain America's efforts to defeat Hitler and the Nazis. Most comics contain content about societal issues, politics, and war and peace. Comics, despite what some may think, are not comical most of the time. I'm not sure I appreciate the idea of Disney owning this vehicle that certainly helped mold my young mind but seemed to do so even-handedly. Can Disney own these characters without turning them into socio-political and partisan propagandists?

11. I think the Pixar-Disney marriage is bad too.
They're still making good movies, but for how long? The second Disney decides to take more creative control, Pixar will suffer.

30. What is going to happen to Super Hero Island
at Islands of Adventure? I love that place. Been there four times now. I prefer US/IOA over the Disney parks because of price (you can get incredible deals like a week for little more than a day at a Disney park).

Comics are kind of schizoid now as you see little kids adoring Wolverine (who is one of the most violent characters in the Marvel universe). I just don't see Marvel Zombies existing in the same world with Mickey.

The target audience for the books are about 35-45. Us older readers (like me) remember when things were not so dark (where Gwen Stacy biting it was an incredible shock). Nowdays with Gwen being revealed as having children with Norman Osborne - I just don't know what to think. I am not reading anymore.

21. But that's DC!
And look what they did to Catwoman. I fully expect a Catwoman II attended by 12 year old girls walking away with disgusted faces.

16. DC comics has been owned by Warner Bros.

since 69'. I don't like the idea of more corporate consolidation either. It will probably make Marvel licenses go up in price under Disney. Things will change for people in the industry but how much is unknown. I work in the toy industry and work on licensed Marvel projects from time to time. I'm sure things will change for me but how much is the question. For fans merchandise may get a little more expensive.

9. Bad.
It's all about acquiring the Marvel Pictures studio, and those properties. It means they can't develop their own ideas in house...duh! ABC/ESPN/Disney sucks.

28. Bingo
Diney as a separate entity is basically dead. There's no creative spark in there anymore. All "Disney" is now, are a bunch of merchandising launches, some shut-the-kids-up video releases, and inane screaming kid TV programs. So they're basically blobbing everything they can to get new material - Pixar, Marvel, what have you.

13. Bad, very very bad.
Reading Marvel comics while growing up in Mtn. Home, Idaho was one of the

ways I kept my sanity. 12cents a comic, can you imagine? I'm glad to see

Stan Lee live long enough to see Marvel become a powerhouse over DC comics,

but Disney? Now Marvel will become white bread like the Disney channel.

15. It will probably hurt smaller companies
who purchase Marvel licenses to produce statues and toys of their characters. I'm sure that future licenses will be much more expensive under Disney.

17. seems to me that even in the 1970s
weren't more than 5% of the population reading comic books with any regularity. I am guessing that number is even lower now. Probably the videos had wide distribution, I remember my little girl (who is 20 today, happy birthday T!!) watching some x-men videos as a kid. Probably those always tended towards 'wholesomeness'. When I was a kid I used to watch 'the wonderful world of Disney' every week. That and Mutual of Omaha's 'Wild Kingdon' were staples of my childhood, and I like to think beneficial ones, although I cannot remember much about the shows.

Point is that Disney already has a huge audience with TV and movies. It seems to me that comics took a turn to the darkside anyway what with characters like Guy Gardner, Wolverine, and Daredevil being far more thuggish than the heroes of old. And Ben's old girlfriend, Alicia seemed to get younger and more curvaceous as time went on. Thumbs-down to that crap.

As a lifelong comics collector I'll be watching this closely.

I will wait to see how this plays out.

I'm just scared that Disney will fuck with the creative areas of Marvel and try to make everything "kid/family-friendly. :scared:

Except for the company that's consolidating. No matter who swallows up Marvel, it's bad for the rest of us.

31. marvel itself has a long history of consolidating
It started out as just one part of a publishing company. It has been bought and sold itself several times. Over the years it acquired among other things an animation studio, a book publisher, a toy company, and a trading card company.

Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 09:04 PM by onenote
it takes two to tango. funny how some here think marvel would be better off staying with the current ownership when its clear that the current ownership is no less interested in making money than disney.
