Los Angeles Times: Fire moves west toward Santa Clarita, Sylmar; Mt. Wilson in peril
Fire moves west toward Santa Clarita, Sylmar; Mt. Wilson in peril
August 31, 2009 | 12:13 pm

Crews battling the Station fire believe that it's only a matter of time before the deadly blaze hits Mt. Wilson, but officials are hopeful that frantic work by hand crews and aircraft dropping flame retardant will protect the communications centers there.

"There is a good chance the fire will hit Mt. Wilson today," said Ray Dombroski, spokesperson for the U.S. Forest Service. "The fire is currently on two sides of Mt. Wilson, about one-half mile to the north and about one mile southwest."

All firefighters were taken off the mountain earlier his morning, he said. Mt. Wilson Road, a narrow, winding two-lane road has been closed since 6 a.m. Dombroski said it is too dangerous to have firefighters near the communication towers and the observatory complex.

Firefighters plan to use fixed-wing aircraft to drop fire retardant on the mountain, he said.

The fire, which has destroyed 21 homes and killed two firefighters, was also moving quickly to the west, burning to within a few miles of Santa Clarita as well as near Sylmar. No evacuations have been made in those areas, and it's unclear how close the western edge of the blaze is to homes. ........(more)

1. There are actually several fires. Mt Wilson isn't anywhere near Santa Clarita
the story is kinda sloppy...
But anybody near any of those blazes needs to be on the lookout!

3. Aren't Santa Clarita and Mt. Wilson actually opposite ends of the same spreading fire?
It's its own spreading, mega-fire "ecosystem" at this point, yes?

7. I don't think so they are 40 miles apart. It would be the biggest fire in recorded history

9. uh, well:

http://news.lalate.com/2009/08/30/california-fires-map/

The fire doesn't seem to be literally at Santa Clarita (yet), but is driving towards the 14 freeway -- the same fire that's threatening Mt. Wilson on the other end...

10. It's all one fire.
Started in one spot and it's spreading like crazy. Expected containment is Sept. 15. Shit.

16. If you believe that Cal Fire is in error about this fire, perhaps you should contact them to correct

19. Just a comment from MY perspective - I have been called a liar and crazy
by DUers in other states (some of whom have never set foot in CA),when discussing the FACTS about our geography, weather, earthquakes, etc. I do know what I am talking about, and if I am uncertain, I will come right out and admit it.

I just get tired of outsiders who think they know more than we locals do when in fact they know nothing whatsoever about CA........sorry I mistook you for one.

17. (laughing at how somebody in Ottumwa, IA thinks they know more about
our fires than we who are looking right the hell at the flames do)

15. If you look at CalFire's map of the Station Fire, you will see that the
western edge points toward Santa Clarita. It is all the same fire, which reached 85,000 acres this AM.

2. This is one nasty fire. As long as the weather stays as it is,
it's going to continue to move. I spent most of my life in California, and have seen way more wildfires than I wanted to see. This one promises to be one of the worst.

11. 18,000 people in L.A.
die every year from particle inhalation. I bet it starts going up after this fire.

8. Yep, that's a big honkin' fire but 105K acres actually is just 13 x 13 miles
which is still one hell of a lot of real estate.

13. It is frightening, imo, that it grew at least 20,000 acres in such a short time...
the fire is growing "exponentially" very quickly.
