Illinois is broke
A friend of mine is on Medicare and as a retired employee of the state of Illinois gets her and her husband's supplemental health insurance from Illinois. One of them recently required hospitalization and expected Illinois to pick after Medicare paid. They got a notice from the hospital that Illinois can not pay now as they have no funds so until they pay my friend is expected to do the paying.

12. This is the flipside of insane tax policies
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 03:48 PM by SoCalDem
As federal taxes get cut and cut and cut for the richest of us, the aid to states that comes FROM the federal government..goes away..leaving huge, gaping holes in the states' budgets..

It's the domino theory, writ large:(

Lots of republicans there too.

Chicago is dem, but downstate is blood red in places. I was born there, raised and have family there. It is a very 'conservative' state despite the occasional dem pol who shakes to the top.

Dems controlling. Hah.

PS: Have a Bozo button...if you know what it is.

15. And our "Democrats" in Chicago
are siphoning away school and park tax funding to condo and strip mall construction, selling public resources like parking meters on 75-year contracts, and demolishing a hospital for an Olympics bid that nobody wants. Why isn't the FBI interested in all this, one wonders.

16. yeah, they are corrupt.
My parents worked in the state system.

They were good people and got beat down by both sides for lack of loyalty. I remember the most nail-chewing when they had to go up against R's for jobs and promotions.

The dems run it on the outside, but there is a strong streak of payola that cuts across both sides in that place. The payola keeps it very anti-democratic.

It is broke politically as well. And, I hate to admit it, we are a Dem controlled state.

8. illinois Medicaid payments are up to a year behind
this is the first time i have heard this. this is not going to go over with the retired state workers.

the guys refuse to pass a tax hike to pay for this and other social programs. there`s an election next year and no one will commit to actually solving the problems

17. When I worked for the State of Illinois the joke was the
State Retirement Plan consisted of one (1) silver .38 round with your name engraved. You had to supply your own weapon.

19. For all of you who claimed that California got what it deserved...
Fuck you. We were merely the canary in the coal mine. I hope that there is a lot more compassion for our fellow citizens in Illinois than there is for our fellow citizens in California.
