A student at my school was the victim of a likely fatal car accident
and another student, one I know very well, was the driver. The boy who died fell out of the bed of a pick up truck. Both he and the driver had been drinking. One boy dead and the other likely to, at best, be tramatized by unbearable guilt. I am just disgusted. Please warn your kids. Don't ride in the back of a pick up truck. It takes just one wrong turn to end a life.

7. I don't know for sure that either one was drunk
though they had apparently been drinking.

3. How sad
You have my condolences. My first semester at college, a group of students were riding around in the back of a pickup, all were underage and drunk, when the truck flipped. It wasn't pretty. Is the school offering free counseling to students and families?

6. for the most part
I was quite close to the driver. He was a one and one student for 60 hours for a course.

20. My son lost 4 friends over the course of a year
when he was in HS - car accidents, drug ODs, suicide... all horrible things. It just opens gashes inside you that might heal over a bit, but never really go away.

I can only imagine what a kick in the gut this must feel like.

5. Teen-age car accidents are heartbreaking
Whether it's from drinking or driving too fast or just making an over-correction out of inexperience. It's so hard. I wish there was a way to transport perfect knowledge to them to save everyone so much grief.

9. I had a student die the same way
He had been in my third grade class, and the tragedy happened when he was 13. Flew out of the bed of the truck. Everyone in the truck had been drinking. At the time, it was a dry county. I hate dry counties, because bootleggers have no restraints on who buys their beer. Interestingly enough, when the county went wet, the incidence of vehicle accidents went way down.

So don't ride in the back of pickups--but also don't drink and drive. And vote your county wet--it actually saves lives.

13. A few years ago
students at a local high school were moving lockers from one building to another in the back of a pickup. Several students were riding in the back to steady the lockers and make sure they didn't fall over and so on. The driver hit a speed bump at no more than 7 mph flipping one student out of the back. He landed on his neck and that was the end of that. They don't need to be drinking for this to happen. Accidents occur, all we can do is be as careful as we can regardless of circumstances.

14. Whoa. Yes, tell them not to, absolutely. In California it is illegal,
and you will be stopped by the police and not allowed to continue. So definitely, tell them. Yes, that's right, put the nanny state law on them. Because those who complain about the nanny state, are exactly those idiots most in need of a nanny.

18. When I was a kid, I and most of my friends rode in the back of pickups constantly.
Never saw anyone get hurt, much less killed. Of course, we weren't riding with a drunk driver behind the wheel--usually it was an adult or older teenager--always sober.

Teach your kids to use good judgement. Getting in any vehicle with a drunk driver is life-threatening.

I'm sorry to hear about your schoolmates, dsc.

21. I'm so sorry to hear that.
It's never okay when we lose a student.

I almost lost my son, the end of his freshman year, when he did something even more dangerous (riding on the hood of a car, which he didn't stay on.)

He was always extremely physically impulsive, and repeatedly injured himself growing up. When school called, it was always him. I never had to ask WHICH son had fallen, knocked himself unconscious, needed stitches,etc.. The emergency room knew us.

That time he scared himself enough to finally start thinking before acting, and the rate of injury decreased rapidly.

My thoughts are with the students and their families.
