1. Me too!!!!
I am from North Carolina and sometimes I have had thoughts about writing Teddy before writing a letter to my own US Senators. I always envied the citizen of Massachusetts - you had (still have in Kerry) some great representation for you down in Washington.DC.

4. And even tho' I've cried buckets of tears and watched
the Cortege, the Memorial, the Mass and the Graveside Tributes - I still can't get my head around the fact that he is gone.

It's like - ok, that was so very sad, and what a fitting tribute to a great man, but wait until he gets back to the floor of the Senate and starts kicking ass!

I cannot imagine the Senate without him, and even tho' I know it to be true, I cannot imagine him gone.

5. Something that helps me-
Edited on Mon Aug-31-09 04:30 PM by Gregorian
After I lost both of my cat brothers in the last two years, I spent a lot of time thinking about life, and death. And what happens.

I had some thoughts come to me that could be religious or engineering/physics based. Energy is neither created nor destroyed. We are energy, essentially. The other is that we are born in the same way, and we all die in the same way. We are born from some place, and it is the same place for all of us. I am assuming, but I can't imagine why I would be born from one place, and you another. And we die to the same place. I could add that maybe we don't die to the same place, but if not then maybe there is some heaven/hell kind of scenario. But in essence my idea is that we're going to essentially the same place. It could even be better if the Cheney's did go somewhere other than the Teddy's. But now I'm going way out on a limb. The basic idea has a sense of certainty to it.

And when I think of these things, I realize that we never lose anyone. There are many thoughts that can come from this. But for this post, I would like to say that even though nothing is permanent, the impermanence is not permanent. It doesn't mean we'll recognize the energy as the one we knew, but it does mean that perhaps we can avoid some of the feeling of loss.

It seems overwhelming. But maybe it isn't.

I also feel the loss when I think of what seems like such finality. The end of a Kennedy era. I think it may be brighter than it seems, the way we're looking at it.

6. I have to admit that I have been much nicer to be around since I learned about all the
things he did to help other people. He's inspired me to be better.

7. It's everywhere.
I'm talking about it with everyone. Well, except for the 'pubs.

I spent the weekend talking with my mom here, for her 81st birthday. We ate sandwiches in the forest while discussing the bigness of Teddy. And how we're all inspired to give and measure up to a taller standard. We even cried. Man, it's beautiful.

9. It is really big.
All of a sudden, it's REALLY not about me anymore. 22 1/2 years of AA, and it took the death of an incredible man (another recovering alcoholic) to get my attention. And nothing anyone ever says against him, or us, or me will matter. It's all about helping other people and THAT is what will turn enemies into allies.

10. He had an excuse, or two, or three, to be bitter.
My mom told me something I hadn't heard before. Teddy was so afraid that he took a different route to work and home every day. With secret service in front and rear. He was nervous, after his two brothers were murdered. That is when I realized just how much he has been through. I'm recovering, too. I know pain. But I made it about ME. I have resentment. He wasn't perfect. But he has something I don't. And I want to try. I keep thinking about the alternative. Why not aim high. It takes bravery. I call it transcending the human condition.

11. Yes, working hard because we may not be as smart as the other guys.
I read The Last Brother by Joe McGinniss a loooong time ago and that book gives a revealing story about what Ted was put through from his childhood. I cried reading that book. That book caused me to love him from that day forward.
