Schilling has 'some interest' in Kennedy's seat
I read this with some amusement. Like Massachusetts would elect somebody with neanderthal political views to replace Ted Kennedy. Not gonna happen, but it is a free country. :) -WB

Schilling has 'some interest' in Kennedy's seat

BOSTON (AP) - Curt Schilling, the former major league pitcher who won the allegiance of Bostonians by leading the Red Sox to the 2004 World Series, said Wednesday that he has "some interest" in running for the seat held for nearly 50 years by Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Schilling, a registered independent and longtime Republican supporter, wrote on his blog that while his family and video gaming company, 38 Studios, are high priorities, "I do have some interest in the possibility."

"That being said, to get to there, from where I am today, many, many things would have to align themselves for that to truly happen," he added.

Any other comment "would be speculation on top of speculation," Schilling said, adding, "My hope is that whatever happens, and whomever it happens to, this state makes the decision and chooses the best person — regardless of sex, race, religion or political affiliation — to help get this state back to the place it deserves to be."

Schilling refused to comment when his office was contacted by phone.

The 42-year-old lives in suburban Medfield and campaigned for President George W. Bush in 2004 and Sen. John McCain in 2008.

As a player, he won three World Series, in 2001 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and in 2004 and 2007 with the Red Sox. He became a Sox legend when he won Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series while blood from an injured ankle seeped through his sock. He retired in March.

He's got nothing upstairs. No political experience at all.

And yeah he may be popular with the jocks, but he's still a Bush loving Republican running in the bluest region in the entire country.

He's got NO shot.

9. So you aren't bothered by Martha Coakley's enthusiasm over RomneyCare?
I sure am. Oh yeah, she would be better than Cu*t SHILLing, of course. But definitely not worthy of a seat once occupied by JFK, and then for 47 years by his little brother Teddy.

22. Um, it's really myopic to say the hero of the 2004 World series doesn't have a chance
in the heart of Red Sox country. There hasn't been a COMPLETE sea change in voters from 2002 when they elected Mitt fucking Romneym whos major claim to fame was running the 02 Olympics, which I think Bay Staters care slightly less about than 2 World Series rings for the long suffering Sox. Coakley isn't a good candidate against any number of Republican candidates, much less Schilling. She was on the losing side of marijuana decriminalization, despite her best attempt at parroting the bullshit talking points of the status quo. And as mentioned, she isn't credible on healthcare, the current biggest political issue in the nation.

Jim McGovern would be better, as would Markey and Meehan (even though Marty has pissed me off a little in the past).

6. Oh fucking great. It's taken this long and we still aren't rid of dumbass Jim Bunning.
Another dipshit washed-up pitcher as a US Senator?

Massachusetts elected Willard M. Romney as their Guv. Can't take anything for granted.

7. Schilling should learn from Lynn Swann's example in PA in 2006
when he ran for Governor. He got trounced big-time by Ed Rendell.

23. None of the probable candidates for MA are as popular statewide as Ed Rendell is in PA
You can't rely on this one thing the races have in common.

8. Schilling has a big mouth and no action
take it from a longtime Phillies fan. This guy talks, talks, talks to the media. Loves the media, will say anything to reporters for the attention. Then when the reporters follow up with him he says, oh sorry I misspoke, I didn't really mean it.

Curt was in the top 5. Not Senate material, esp in the bluest state in the country.

20. No, the poll was among the athletes themselves
One of the quotes re: Schilling was, "Every 5th day he's your best bud. Besides that everyone hates the guy"

17. Schilling? Please!
The sad thing is that he would actually get some votes here, too. Half of them from Red Sox fans, and the other half from the 25 right wing nuts we still have left. The other 50 republicans would probably sit this one out or write someone in.

25. how many people saying "he doesn't have a chance" are real baseball fans?
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:22 AM by Bombtrack
Those that know how far and away more godlike Red Sox Nation sees their team than other fans of other teams, especially now that some of them, particularly Schilling are responsible for breaking an 86 year old curse and then getting another ring for good measure 3 years after that.

Only 1 member of the 2004 Red Sox roster voted for Kerry, (Gabe Kapler), and those politics don't change the heavily Democratic leaning Bay States love for the team. Not that that's a very well known fact, but people are aware guys through these winning years like Schilling, Trot Nixon, Bill Mueller etc. are all bible-thumping right-wingers, and it was known that Ted Williams was as big a Republican and an even bigger prick than Schilling is.

Massachusetts wouldn't elect Manny Ramirez or Pedro before they went to other teams because the media never stopped demonizing their Dominican asses (in addition to the fact that Manny is a dimbulb, but so is Johnny Damon, who I wouldn't have called unelectable in MA before he went to the Yanks.) Whitebread Curt gets no such harsh treatment and even is a multi-weekly regular on the most popular sports/idiotic racist republican morning show on New England radio, Dennis and Callahan, where he regularly says things we and many others would consider idiotic but never seems to get in any trouble for it.

Stop the underestimation/delusion. We need to to win this and it might not be so easy.
