A Lake Mills man has been charged with killing his 4-month-old son by throwing him against a bedroom wall. Michael F. Wey, 30, was charged on Aug. 17 with physical abuse of a child-intentionally causing great bodily harm, but on Wednesday the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office amended the charge to first-degree reckless homicide.
Nikolai Andrew Wey suffered severe head injuries in his home on Aug. 15 and died after being taken off life support Aug. 21 at UW Children's Hospital in Madison. A preliminary hearing in Jefferson County Circuit Court is scheduled for today. Wey remained Wednesday in the Jefferson County Jail on $50,000 cash bail.
According to the criminal complaint, Wey initially told hospital staff in Fort Atkinson that his son was sick but later said Nikolai had fallen about 2 feet from his bed to the floor at about 10 p.m. on Aug. 14 while he was out of the room and his wife and the boy's mother, Eliana Wey, was at work. When confronted by police about the injuries, Wey initially said he was playing with his son and had thrown the boy up in the air but dropped him on his head.
Wey ultimately told police that Nikolai would not stop crying, so he picked the child up by one leg and with his other hand on the child's chest, threw him into the wall with the boy landing in his crib. Doctors in Madison told police on Aug. 17 that Nikolai's brain had "basically ceased functioning," according to the complaint.
