WICHITA — A former Goddard police officer accused of using a police computer to send naked pictures of himself pleaded guilty in federal court today to wire fraud.

Calvin Schaffer, 44, admitted in his plea that he arrested a woman for driving under the influence of alcohol on Feb. 27. Later, he contacted the woman and suggested he could arrange for the charges to be dismissed if she would have sex with him.

While on duty, Schaffer used police department computers to send e-mails and photographs to the woman. In the photos, he appeared partially undressed and nude. The messages traveled over the Internet through servers in California and Virginia.

Sentencing is set for Nov. 16. Schaffer faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

It involved a sheriff in Council Grove. He rented a VHS machine (remember those and how we used to rent them to view movies at home?), hooked it up to camcorder. Then he and his wife "performed" and taped it. He returned the machine to the store BUT FORGOT TO TAKE THE TAPE OUT!!!

Man, talk about "local scandal!" It was the talk of many counties around.

The Sexy Videotape

Claim: A couple rents a video camera and VCR and tapes themselves engaging in sex, then accidentally leaves the tape in the player when they return it to the video store. The tape is quickly circulated and duplicated until nearly everyone in town has a copy.

Status: True.

Origins: In late 1986 in the small farm town of Council Grove, Kansas (pop. 2300), Corky Woodward rented a camera and a videocassette player from the only rental store in town. Woodward, the sheriff of Morris County, then made an erotic 90-minute tape of himself and his wife Dannette, but inadvertently left the tape in the VCR when he returned it to the store. The next person to rent the player got the tape as well, and soon hundreds of copies were circulating throughout town.

I worked my way through college as a cop many years ago (early 1960s) and if I had a dollar for every time one of the city cops traded a ticket or arrest for a piece of ass, I'd have retired long before I actually did.
(This was in a ~300,000 population city)

It's been quite a while since these Internet(s) tubes have been in our lives, and more than one person has been busted for sending nude pictures to others using the tubes.

Why do people keep doing it?
