NYT: Obama Is Not Dropping The Public Option (some details on what are being considered for cutting)
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 10:02 PM by berni_mccoy
...With Congressional Republicans standing almost unanimously in opposition to the Democratic approach, the target now for Mr. Obama is primarily a handful of moderate Democrats and the one Republican who seems open to a deal, Senator Olympia J. Snowe of Maine.
...
So far, the administration’s ideas of concessions are likely to fall far short of the fundamental changes that Congressional Republicans seek.

For now, White House officials said, Mr. Obama remains committed to the goal of insuring all Americans and still prefers to foster competition for insurance companies by creating a new government insurance program, or public option.

White House officials are combing the versions of health care legislation approved by four of the five Congressional committees with jurisdiction on the issue, both to find common ground and to jettison provisions — some relatively minor — that have drawn fire from critics on the political right.

To avoid some of the most heated criticism voiced in recent weeks, White House officials said they would have no objection if Congress scrapped proposals to have Medicare pay for counseling on end-of-life care.

Critics said such counseling could lead to pressure on patients to forgo expensive treatments for terminal illnesses. Mr. Obama has said it is ludicrous to suggest that “we want to set up death panels to pull the plug on Grandma.”

White House officials said Congress could also drop proposals requiring the government to create school-based health clinics and collect nationwide data on health and health care by race, sex, sexual orientation and “gender identity.”

Supporters of the House bill said such data would help reduce “health disparities,” but critics said they feared the government could assemble a database that posed a threat to personal privacy.

NOTE: These concessions aren't to win over Republicans (other than Sen. Snowe), but to win over Blue Dogs to reach 60 in the Senate.

3. I am for it, but we only have 45 dems willing to do that. I believe this push by Obama
is to get the Blue Dogs and Snowe on board. Then they have everything they need without pulling any parliamentary procedures.

18. Nope
From the link in the previous comment:

And there the irony continues: Some experts, including on Capitol Hill, believe that a more robust public option will generate crucial savings needed to keep health care reform in the black--and thus prevent it from expiring.

There will always a few assholes like wrong way Lieberman and Barney Rubble Nelson who will vote no. This is to get over 50 using reconciliation.

9. How about telling all the DU doom-and-gloomers first...

They're the ones that believe Politico over their President.

14. I Think That These Events Have a Function
the Politico articles and DU doom and gloomers are holding the dems feet to the fire. Look at how the repub doom and gloomers are able to impact town hall turnouts. We need our own doom and gloomers to get action going on our side.

8. Sounds ok to me...
End-of-life counseling could probably be done during a regular doctor's visit anyway. Anyone considering those options would probably be sick enough to be seeing a doctor on a regular basis. I don't really see the need for this if it's a sticking point for passage of the bill. School based health clinics would be great, but maybe this could be done under some other proposal. If I'm not mistaken, Head Start children and Migrant Worker children have gotten health care of some sort in the past (not sure about now though) so the idea is not completely unheard of. The gathering of data probably should be dropped for now just so the "crazies" won't jump off the deep end over scientific study. We mustn't cut off our noses just to spite our faces. Pres. Obams MUST succeed with health care reform!!!! That's one of the main reasons we elected him. IMO.
