The wobbly bits that shook the world: The joyous support created by one model's picture

The wobbly bits that shook the world: The joyous support created by one model's picture (flabby tummy and all)

By Linda Kelsey

At first glance it's just the kind of playful picture your boyfriend might snap of you, caught unawares on a lazy Sunday morning. The subject looks glowing, happy, natural, totally at ease with her body and herself.

-------------------------

So what impact did this little mound of flesh have? Were women disgusted that such an offensive thing should be displayed in public?

Well, even though it was only 3in square and hidden away on page 194, this extraordinary image of a woman with wobbly bits that have not been airbrushed away has sparked a whirlwind of reaction - almost all of it positive.

Hundreds of readers flooded the magazine's website the moment after the image first appeared, roaring their approval and appreciation with comments like: 'I love this picture. I was starting to despair of ever seeing real women in magazines and it made me reassess how I look at myself. I have a similar tummy which I hate - but look at her, she's beautiful.'

Considering where you see the evidence of it... or at least I know plenty of moms who look like that, me included! :)

14. God, I know. People really need to make their own choices.
I gained my weight due to excessive eating and lack of exercise. I make occasional food choices that cause health police to scream, but I added much needed activity to my life.

Weight is an individual's choice. Well, to some extent, their doctor will provide input. Mine gauged family history, my young age, blood pressure, and blood test to determine what was right for me.

The woman is the picture is beautiful, healthy, and need not change.

5. it also looks a lot more like excess skin
than excess fat. if you see the stretch marks, it becomes even more apparent.

when i was a personal trainer, i saw some clients who after they lost massive weight would have a lot of excess skin like this.

skin IS elastic, but once stretched to a certian point, will never recover.

39. yes
that is also evidenced by the direction of the stretch marks and the location of the excess skin.

women also TEND (individuals vary) to have a gynoid fat deposition pattern, not emphasis on the abdominal region (which is more a male thing)

17. I saw that too. I went, Awww, she just had a baby. She's young--most of that will go away in a year.
A wee bit of that stretched tummy may remain below the belly button, like the stretch marks that remain.

It's really a lovely, lovely picture, though. It made me smile.

32. I thought so too. I was shocked to see my belly look similar to that
after having my baby. I guess I thought it would look like it did pre-pregnancy. Hahaha!! What a joke. It has toned up some, but it is still a little loose. I think the woman in this picture looks great.

37. yes
post pregnancy tummy is often a good example of stretched skin.

there are ways to increase the elasticity and recovery ability of skin toSOME extent, but oncestretched beyond that point, it simply stays stretched.

this is true of pretty much all tissues, to include bone and muscle too.

41. that is exactly what my belly looks like
2 years after having my daughter. I lost all of the baby weight, down to pre-high school weight. 115 lbs. But I have all that skin, the exact same shape as hers. Meh, my battle wounds, along with the c-section scar. It's all good.

3. This is how many women look. I know that the women who
work out several hours a day, probably don't, but those who don't probably do. Interesting-I never thought about those other magazines airbrushing.

7. ummmmm.. what is the problem?
Most - if not all - of the women I've seen naked have been beautiful. That term is kinda broad where I'm concerned.

I only feel/felt enormously grateful.

9. I'm betting they were happy to be with you, too
Bigmack, here's the deal. Women now are told that unless they are perfect, they do not deserve to be alive, to be loved, etcetera. Extreme? When women are having liposuction on their ANKLES, having plastic surgery on their genitals because they aren't "perfect," on and on and on, where does it end?

All women think they're ten pounds overweight. All women hope that nobody will notice a little flab on their belly, some cellulite, wrinkles, gray hair or any other sign of lack of perfection. All women hope to find a lover that thinks they are beautiful, just as they are.

The greatest beauty product the world has ever known? Self-confidence. If women in this society had it, numerous industries would go into bankruptcy tomorrow morning.

23. I had an office in an executive suite
one of the co-tenants on my floor was a media placement company that specialized in the Seventeen style magazine segment.

As I was explaining my office layout to someone I came to this company's space. "This is where the lie is propagated."

20. I think the woman pictured is lovely, and can hardly be called "fat"!
The pose tends to bunch her up at her midsection and hips, where a healthy woman should have some substance. My guess is if she stood up, her proportions would look quite natural on her.

And, as others have mentioned, it is her eyes that first catch my attention. Maybe that should be a lesson for us all.

I was so insecure and unhappy with it (on yes, was 5 1/2 ft tall, quite thin at the time). Women often have a tummy like this and am very glad to see this photo. Thank you

25. What a beautiful woman!
The article says people notice her tummy first. I noticed her beautiful face and shoulders first.
Again, it's a woman's inner beauty that makes her pretty on the outside and this woman's smile says it all.

Capturing the way we actually look, whatta high flown concept

Starved until there's nothing left but knees and elbows, and photoshopped into even sharper planes and angles... that was never attractive, it was just weird. And as fetching as a sheet of anodized aluminum.
