Plain Dealer asshat Kevin O Brien: Health care is not and cannot be a "right."
Global warming hoaxer. McCain Supporter. Talibornagain. In all likelihood the moron who greenlighted the editorialized headline to Ted Kennedy's passing. And now . . . this:

http://www.cleveland.com/obrien/index.ssf/2009/09/health_care_costs_money_real_r.html

Committee Chairman Bishop William F. Murphy wrote that efforts to reform the U.S. health care system "must begin with the principle that decent health care is not a privilege, but a right . . ."

That's a principle based on a false premise.

Life is a right.

It is a gift from God or, if you prefer a nonreligious approach, nature. From the moment we're able to take care of ourselves, other people need not intervene to cause us to continue living. We pay no fee to breathe. We require no one's permission to do so. We owe our lives to no person, and we live as long as our perishable bodies will allow. All by itself, life goes on.

Liberty is a right, too.

Any philosopher worth his salt will tell you that in a state of nature, humans are free. (snip)

Now, what about health? Does it occur naturally?

What occurs naturally is its polar opposite, death. From the day of our conception, each of us is on a downward slope that leads to the day when even the healthiest person's body will fail and die. The experience of thousands upon thousands of years tells us with perfect clarity that good health is not a God-given or naturally occurring right. Earthly immortality is neither granted to us nor achievable by our own efforts.

Nor, it should be obvious, can health care be a gift from God or nature.

All are products of human ingenuity and activity -- of human labor. And no one has a right simply to help himself to the labor of another. We abolished slavery in this country long ago.

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

I mean, this assrocket writes some humdingers, for sure, but this takes the damned cake. How is someone this BACKWARD and drop-dead stupid allowed to write for a major newspaper? This is about the most twisted bullshit logic I've ever seen. Using his own words against him, life is about as much of a right in this country as the value a corporation puts on it. Same with liberty, sad as it is to say.

This man, BTW, is one step away from being head of the editorial board of this paper.

1. Starts with "God" backslips into Libertarianism
and takes logical stretches the whole fucking way.

2. People don't need to read newspapers to know MSM is a commercial..
For the 12% , the rest of us use the internet.

3. Hugh, when was the last time the PD was considered a Major Newspaper...
O'Brien is an ass hat. He interviewed me when I was running for office, the interview to get endorsed...

I saw him in North Olmsted, at a "parents" night cover former State Rep. Kusputis giving a speech about Charter School.

He clearly made a racial slur by talking about kids in the inner city and then mimicking an ape.

You know who laughed the loudest.

Kevin O'Brien....

"God", or "nature", if you prefer, never gave US Citizens the right to bear arms, or the right to pursue profits, or the freedom of speech or any of the other rights mentioned in the Constitution. After all, the Constitution is a Man Made document. So none of the "Rights" mentioned in the Constitution are creadable.

The right to own property, a man made right.

Laws of NAture are the only laws that should be considered.

what an Ass Hat...

6. It still has one of the largest circulations in Ohio.
And the main news source for heavily blue Northeast Ohio.

Unfortunately, this rag and the Columbus DitchPack are heavily swung to the corptocracy and it shows.

Does Kevin or no one else get that the United States stole land from the Indians and created their "rights" by default? Oh wait, of course they don't. They probably also think History isn't written by the victors and Americans speaking English is a birthright and not an accident of history.

4. *sigh*- his dysfunctional take always returns to the same basis - which is
anti-abortion and nothing else. It permeates his insidious writings.

7. Actually he went a lot farther back than the current discussion on Abortion
The argument he makes comes from two sources, the first is Hobbs and the second is Locke, both of whom argued for man as a creation of God as the ultmate basis of rights.

5. He misunderstands the role of Government, which is not to enable god's will
Government by the people can convey on its subjects any right they chose. It is a right simply because we chose to make it a right.

8. This is a serious argument that has never been discussed debated
ans settled in this country. This is the reason there are
such fights over Health Care.

Likewise, some here at DU cringe if the phrase common good
is mentioned. Do we as a country believe in rugged Individualism
or do we believe there is a common good in which we share responsibility
as well as derive benefits.

If we as a country decided once and for all how we stand on thes
two issues, the road would be a lot easier in establishing
policy.

10. This was brought up earlier in another thread . . .
. . . for all of the bluster that Repukes barf out about "Rugged Individualism", none of them practice it in real life. They all believe in and belong to at least one, if not several, collectives (the church, the corporation, John Birch Society, the GOP itself, the country club, the Homeowners association, etc) that have very stringent rules/restrictions on individualism.

I think that for all of their talk, they're taking the "privatize the good (to me) and socialize the risk and loss (to the rest of you)" position. They don't want health care for anyone else except themselves when it comes down to it. And this position is steadfastly shared within their clique . .. their GROUP.

They couldn't take an individual stance to save their lives no matter HOW many times they're called out on it.

9. Kevin O'Brien is, and always has been, a complete asshat.
And then you have people writing in saying they can't stand the PD because that terrible Connie Schultz is such a bleeding liberal. Go figure.

11. Some of the support letters make me laugh.
Makes me think they're passing around the same defective brain in the suburbs.

I still want them to justify tax dollars to kill people over tax dollars to help people with any kind of logic. I think I'll be waiting long on this one.

he should be fighting for the abolishment of single-payer police depts., fire depts., and our single-payer military. :eyes:
