Another Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Home Up for Sale

Today MSN Real Estate is reporting that yet another home built on the show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition is being sold. The reason for the sale of this home is similar to the reason for the sale of the other homes; the family just cannot make ends meet. The problems started for the family when the father Bryan lost his job. He was later able to get another job, but that job also ended when he was injured. Now he and his family is unable to pay for the bills associated with the home so they are selling it.

Their stories are so f'ing heartbreaking

SSD which barely covers food and a portion of what I owe for monthly bills. The other reason I do not enter such contests is the tons of junk mail..that I have spent years trying to get shut of.
When we bought this place we received about 400 pounds of the stuff in the first year. What don't ya'll get about , we just bought a house and we spent all we had to get it?

I always thought that the folks that donate the house should help make sure you can pay the taxes for at least several years or make a deal with the local tax authority.

This is so sad, these folks they 'help' are usually in bad shape financially to start with, then get a big lift when they take over the house then find they have 4 x the taxes owed.

to buy a home that is much more in line with their financial situation. At the end of the day they still win.

Some of these areas where they build depend almost entirely on Property Tax for government revenues.

Also, if the property is not sold in time to pay the taxes, it is foreclosed and then sold at auction...

Had he sold like the rest of them it wouldn't have been an issue. To fully understand the issue I suggest you go to the HGTV Dream Home forum because the issue of winning and taxes have been discussed ad nauseum.

Another reason for the HGTV Dream Home sales, and the one I think is the real driver, is where they are. They build the homes in a stated location--the 2010 home is in New Mexico--and award it to someone who neither lives in New Mexico nor wants to. No one wants to own a house they won't live in and can't rent out, so the safest way to deal with the problem is to sell the home, pay down all the taxes associated with winning it, and pocket the profit.

If they were to wait until AFTER the house had been awarded to build it, they might see a few people keep them. But it's better television to present someone with a big house than to present them with a big check and a paint swatch book.

That plus seven kids and you get $1,200 per month utilities and water bills of $400 a month.

Did this family really need a mansion or just a decent place to live?

if the family wasn't doing well, putting them in a mansion and then casting them adrift is really inhumane.

Unless they set up some sort of trust for the family that takes care of the bills then all they are doing is setting them up for another disaster.

Why not build an economical home for them? But wait, that wouldn't get any ratings would it?

and I understand that its never a good idea to try to move in on Martha's sphere of influence.

has been around for a while. I was reminded of it by this post. Been there, done that , in manner of speaking anyway. Back in 1997 I recall spending the whole of July eating beans on toast and going fishing every night to keep my mind off things....lol.
