Past Presidential speeches to schoolkids
With all the furor over Obama having the nerve to ask kids to study and stay in school, one question comes up:

Haven't other Presidents made similar speeches? If so, can anyone tell me who or when?

Big fight going on in the office today!

1. Bush Sr, about drug use in September, 1989
I also seem to remember a Saturday morning special with Bill Clinton that was sort of like a town hall meeting with children. Perhaps someone can find that somewhere.

2. Isn't this insane? There is nothing, absolutely nothing
that Obama can do that the right wing crazies won't go berserk over.
If Obama says "Good Morning" Hannity would go off on what a crap morning it is someplace and what right does Obama have to say it is good when so many are suffering from his policies.

"Dictators today from Afghanistan to Nicaragua do not want to be called Czar or Commissar; they want to be called Mr. President and to pretend that they rule in the people's name, even if they don't. Yes, even Communist dictators holding power through force, against the will of the people, acknowledge the triumph of the American idea when they go through the motions of holding phony elections, forming rubberstamp legislatures to ratify constitutions that will not be honored, and then using our words to call their regimes democracies or republics."

5. Reagan - after the Challenger disaster.
Since so many schools were tuned into live coverage of the shuttle launch, Reagan directed part of his speech addressing school age children that witnessed the disaster.

6. It's perfectly okay if you do it in person though

:wtf:

Just more of the typical RW stupidity that goes beyond mere hypocrisy.

Tansy Gold, who doesn't care if the above was photoshopped or not

7. Yes, but none of them were black presidents. Let's call this what it is...
Nobody would have had a problem with Clinton or Carter, IMO.

Okay, I’ve got some questions for you. Ready? How many of you are going to college? (Applause.) That’s good news. See, that means you’ve set a goal. In order to meet that goal, you’ve got to really be good readers, and you’ve got to study, and listen to your teachers.

President George W. Bush from a May 2002 http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2002/05/20020508-1.html">speech at Clarke Street Elementary School in Milwaukee, Wisc.

It was just fine when chimpy and presidents before him tried to "indoctrinate" the kids at an early age.
