Local Man Trying To Give Away His 100 Cats

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A Sacramento man with 100 cats in his home says he lost his job and can't afford to keep the cats anymore, but county authorities are telling him he wasn't allowed to have that many in the first place.

The three-bedroom house on Belinda way is filled with felines that hide under the furniture, perch on top of the refrigerator and sit in the windows, and animal control says the cats have to go.

"I started with one kitty, then five, then out of control, just more and more and more," said Martin Fonsca. "My wife would say nobody cares for the kitties, nobody more love the kitties than me and my wife."

The City of Sacramento says Martin could be cited for having too many cats -- within city limits, residents are allowed to have seven cats per household.

Animal control says they'll need rescue groups to take the cats and find them new places to live, but all the shelters in the area are full to capacity with cats.

1. What starts this "cat hoarding" thing?
You see stories like this now and then...I wonder if this will eventually be recognized as a mental health condition?

(on another note...I'd hate to smell this guy's carpets...sheesh.)

2. We have three cats and THAT's a litterbox from Hell situation.
WTF? How do you pet 100 cats in a day? Cats need attention. The litterbox must be a ten times a day chore! AAAAARRRRGGHHH!!!

4. Like George Carlin said...
The only thing that smells worse than cat food is cat food that has been through a cat's digestive tract.

7. I have 4 and I can't imagine taking care of more than that.
These people have a problem and it ain't the cats.

9. My grandma was a hoarder. I'm glad she didn't hoard cats.
I can almost see an evolutionary benefit this sort of behavior. A hoard of cats would keep rodents out of the grain so a cat hoarder might become a very valuable member of the community...
