Man's Finger Bitten Off During Health Care Clash

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ―
California authorities say a clash between opponents and supporters of health care reform ended with one man biting off another man's finger.

Ventura County Sheriff's Capt. Frank O'Hanlon says about 100 people demonstrating in favor of health care reforms rallied Wednesday night on a street corner. One protester walked across the street to confront about 25 counter-demonstrators.

O'Hanlon says the man got into an argument and fist fight, during which he bit off the left pinky of a 65-year-old man who opposed health care reform.

A hospital spokeswoman says the man lost half the finger, but doctors reattached it and he was sent home the same night.

She says he had Medicare.

I guess somebody wasn't feeling like letting them bellow and push us around anymore.

I also wonder why these armed patriots didn't pull their boomsticks and shoot.

7. People spend most of their socia lives watching TV and on the net
they don't know how to deal with other people including communicating normally about controversial issues because they have never done it before in their life.

10. I saw a very stark change in our society with the selection of bush-
especially after 9/11.

The snarky- cutting others down "humor"- the arrogant "yer either with us, or with the enemy", mentality.

The thought that 'we' had the 'right' to do whatever we wanted, and no one would/could possibly question or stop us.

"Freedom fries" the "Old europe" FU attitude. We don't negotiate with "terrarists"- "I'm the president, i don't answer to anybody"-

We COULD have chosen to answer the violence of 9/11 with something other than just MORE violence- The nation of Afghanistan didn't deserve to be carpet bombed yet again. We accomplished very little by responding in kind. And now we don't know how we can get out of there....

It IS partly tv and the net- but i think it started when bush tapped into the ugly side of humanity- and made his asinine cowboy, tough-guy attitude, somehow ... acceptable/attractive to people with little impulse control.

It's an unhealthy, self-defeating way of living- imo and difficult to restrain once its been unleashed. ime

Unfortunately,'republicans' aren't the only ones susceptible to it.

I hope we can turn this around. But i'm afraid of what we've been flirting with.

(sorry for running off at the keyboard)

:hi:

9. I read this story earlier today on another site
that story claimed the 65 year old, who opposed health care threw the first punch, and that the guy that was for health care was just walking through, not confronting the other protesters. Biting someone's finger off in self defense is taking it a bit far, but we also don't have the whole story here either.
