JANE HARMAN BREAKS WITH BLUE DOGS, STANDS WITH PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS...
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:18 AM by Hepburn
Email from Venice for Change:

JANE HARMAN BREAKS WITH BLUE DOGS, STANDS WITH PROGRESSIVE CAUCUS,
"I SUPPORT THE PUBLIC OPTION."

At a rally being held later today in downtown Los Angeles, Rep. Jane Harman (CA-36) is expected to stand with the whip of the Progressive Caucus, Diane Watson (CA-33) to voice her support of a strong public option.

"The reason I favor a robust pubic option," stated Harman, "is it's a forcing mechanism to require private sector options to compete with each other. I haven't heard a co-op idea that makes sense to me....I did make that commitment, in writing, that I would vote against a bill that did not have a strong public option in it."

Harman has broken very publicly in the past with the Blue Dog caucus over health care reform, but this is the first time she'll be appearing in public with members of the Progressive Caucus, 65 of whom have written to President Obama and stated they will refuse to pass any bill that doesn't have a strong public option.

Today's rally, sponsored by HCAN and Organizing For America, will feature a number of local leaders as well as congressional lawmakers. Besides Harman and Watson, speakers include (but are unconfirmed at this time), Henry Waxman, Laura Richardson and Maxine Waters.

1. A tiger doesn't change their stripes.
She should be in JAIL for her collaboration with the enemy in the Bush years.

Wait and see what bill she ends up voting for, and what she is willing to compromise away.

2. Agree....
...but thought the news about the rallies was well worth posting!

I cannot make tomorrow's rally ~~ it is closer to me ~~ but will try and see about today.

If you see a tall lady with a Scottie in a Green Pet Stroller ~~ please come over and meet Hepburn and her Scottie Maggie, OK?

:hi:

14. Well, tiger doesn't change their stripes, but...
...human politicians will sometimes support a progressive issue to offset some nasty corporate whoring. See Lieberman, Landrieu.

3. Every turncoat helps
I think the traitors are a tiny minority, most of the blue dogs having been satisfied before the recess by a provision that said the public option would have to negotiate prices on a level playing field with the for profit insurance companies instead of being handed the Medicare bargain rates.

The only reliable GOP votes as I see it in the Senate are Landrieu and Ben Nelson. The others are probably negotiable.

I don't think the DINOs are as big a problem in the House as they are in the Senate.

4. I predict we'll see a lot of this in the coming weeks.
Now that Obama has abandoned the public option, the corporate toadies are free and clear to act like progressives and con us into voting for them again.

11. Damn, did I miss a press conference/statement from Obama on this????
Could you provide a link to the President stating he is abandoning the public option because, when I did a search, all I could find was him consistently defending/supporting the public option!

8. I hadn't heard about that................
But my first guess would have been Congresswoman Heather What's-her-face from Arizona...

She's the one who had her husband's record of arrest for molesting a boy "disappeared" while she was a member of the DA's office.
