ATTENTION: Everyone panicking about Ted Kennedy's Senate seat.
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 11:57 AM by Arkana
I know you've all heard the rumors--Curt Schilling is considering running in the special election for the seat. Also, there were rumors earlier that Shit Romney would try to buy himself a Senate seat, but those have been mostly dispelled by MA DUers.

Let me just make it very clear: THERE WILL BE A DEMOCRAT IN TED KENNEDY'S SENATE SEAT COME JANUARY.

The last time we had a Republican represent us in that august body was 1979. What does that tell you?

As for Curt Schilling, let me reassure you all: Massachusetts residents HATE, HATE, HATE Curt Schilling with the white-hot intensity we used to reserve for Roger Clemens, for two reasons: One, after his heroics in 2004's World Series, Schilling cemented a reputation as Bud Selig's holier-than-thou golden boy. Mention him to any Boston resident and I guarantee you will get an angry, half-unintelligible diatribe in a very thick accent about "that fucker Schilling". As he became a shittier pitcher he got more self-righteous. Remember that testimony he gave to Congress before the steroid commission where he wagged his finger at McGwire, Sosa, and Palmeiro like a disapproving father? Yeah.

Also, you probably know he's a Republican--and MA and Republicans go together like elemental sodium and salt water. Sure, we've had Republican governors, but we take our DC representation very seriously. Take a look at our slate of Congresspeople--not one Republican among them, and like I said--no Repub senators since Edward Brooke and Leverett Saltonstall.

Curt Schilling, if he decides foolishly to run, will get stomped--if not in the primary, then in the general election--because this state loved Ted Kennedy, and electing some scumbag Republican to his seat would be the ultimate insult to his memory.

1. Do you think they'll import a Kennedy? RFK jr and Caroline are NYers. What do you think?

2. Neither.
We'll be watching Joe Kennedy for a while, though--I believe there are a lot of people waiting to see if he'll run.

7. I'd really like to see Teddy Jr -- but I confess it's just because he so impressed
me at his dad's funeral.

3. I'm so glad you posted this -- I was a bit concerned. Rachel is able to
draw the line between her admiration for him as an athlete (she said he made her VERY happy in 2004! :)) and what a terrifying conservative nightmare he would be if he were to attain the Senate seat. So I'm happy to hear your boots on the ground report! :hi:

5. It's interesting to note that the last Republican to represent Massachusetts
was Edward Brooke--an African-American.

6. I'm not even sure the Red Sox management will support Chuck.
They know who their fans are and they aren't about to risk them to help further Schilling's ego. If he runs (and I doubt he does), he'll lose the game in the 1st inning.

10. Well, Martha Coakley, our AG, was first out of the gate
to file papers--but due to being only a state official she doesn't have recorded positions on any major issues...but you can bet your boots that she'll be asked about health care.

11. The other thing about Schilling- he's no native son
Edited on Thu Sep-03-09 12:16 PM by DefenseLawyer
Yeah he helped Boston win the Series twice, but he was a hired gun. He played in half a dozen towns and I think he's from Arizona. Now if Carl Yastrzemski throws his hat in the ring, that's another matter entirely.

19. I am in that I don't know who he is
but not enough to google him.

Had Kennedy stepped down shortly after the inauguration, there would not have been any chance for a Republican to run. When Obama was high in the ratings and there was a lot of goodwill toward him and, by extension, the Democrats.

Also, I don't think that there should always "be a Kennedy" in the Senate. I'd like to think that all of us, including the voters of MA, elect someone based on his competency and vision, not based on his dynasty.

20. Curt Schilling is pretty famous.
Hero of the 2004 World Series--the whole "bloody sock" incident?

He helped the Sox break the 86-year-old Curse of the Bambino, but after that became a grade-A scumbag--campaigning for W and Darth, being Bud Selig's golden boy during the steroid allegations, and just generally becoming a shitty pitcher who whined way too fucking much.

14. It's a two edged sword for me.
No one is worthy of that seat and I panic that we don't elect someone who will take up the torch left by Ted. No one will fill his shoes...no one.

Anyone who thinks we're going to elect a Republican to fill Teddy's spot has got to be smoking some really strong stuff.
